Collecting envelopes as reception.

Jennifer, on January 12, 2016 at 4:39 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 33

Hi everyone. I am not sure what do for collecting the cards that are given to you at the wedding. My soon to be mother in aw says I should walk around with a bag and collect them as I greet everyone at the reception. I thought it was just beat to put a card box on the table. What do you think?

    Hi Jennifer,

Etsy has some gorgeous card boxes! You definitely do not want to go around collecting the cards, that seems gift grabby. I would place a card box on the gift table.

Your FMIL's idea is weird and awkward. Just get a card box.

Have a card box on the table. Most, if not all, will put their cards in there. If you greet someone and they hand you a card, pass it off to your MOH or someone else and have them put it in the card box.

Definitely just put out a card box. Walking around with a bag is essentially begging for cash.

Okay, so I know where your mother in law is getting that because my dad said the same thing. Apparently when they got married 40 years ago, the guests would get in a line and they would hand you their envelope (you would put it in a little pouch) and you would hand them their favor in return.

That practice is so outdated!!! You just need a card box on a table, usually near the guestbook. Etsy has a bunch. I DIYed mine from a wooden box. It could really be anything. Whatever you do, DO NOT walk around collecting them. No one knows that practice any more and will think you are nuts (at best) and tacky/gift grabby (at worst)

Definitely have something on your gift table to collect cards, like a box, basket, some even do birdcages if it goes with their theme. The possibilities are endless. Walking around collecting would be awkward...imagine how a guest would feel who wasn't able to bring a gift for whatever reason. That would be incredibly awkward for everyone involved.

I just ordered a cute vintage looking box thing for my card box (Hobby Lobby is amazing with all their 1/2 off deals). I will just keep this for decor at home afterwords.

Yeah, the bag thing is kinda old; I haven't seen that in quite some time. Card boxes are the way to go, in whatever format. I personally love the birdcages.

A lockable container not too close to an exit.

I have only seen the bag thing with Eastern European cultures (like, you were born there or all your guests were lol). Most of your guests will expect a card box.

All my aunts suggested the same thing.

I don't think that its gift grabby or at least not intended to be, its just old school and how they used to do it when they got married. My aunt actually gave us the Ring Pillow and Envelope Bag my Grandma made for their wedding. We're just putting the bag inside the Card box I ordered, so that it'll be used but not in the way it was originally intended.

Do not do the bag thing. That is weird.

I did a card box, my aunt gave me the advice to make sure that the box either locks or has a secure lid so that the risk of theft is less.

Just wanted to echo a "NO" on the bag. Honestly, if I were at a wedding and they did that, I'd find it rude. Yes on a card box.

Yeah your MIL is cray cray. That would be so awkward for the guests with no card. I wouldn't do that.

As others suggested just designate a box/basket for cards. People will figure it out.

I agree that the bag thing is out dated and would confuse me if I saw it at a wedding.

I might not go the card box route and hand all cards off to my mother to hold onto. I've heard of cards getting stolen if your card box doesn't have a lid, so that's something we are apprehensive of.
