Cocktail hour trail mix bar

Brittany, on January 6, 2017 at 1:18 PM Posted in Planning 0 22

So we finalized our caterer yesterday but they don't really offer appetizers or a craker/cheese trays so I've actually been eyeing trail mix bars lately and am thinking about doing a well stocked area for people to snack on before dinner. Do you think this will be enough to tide them over for about 45 minutes after the ceremony but before dinner? Our caterers were more then happy to do all set up and keeping it replenished but said they don't provide the items so that part we would DIY with my DOC. honestly....good or bad odea?

Agreed, It'd be a cute add on, but you need actual food especially if you're going to serve people booze.

I think it would be more appropriate as part of a bridal shower. I think real apps would be better

Definitely not enough unless you want people plastered by dinner.

Ok, that's what I needed to hear.

No to come up with Plan C because I honestly don't want DIY crackers and cheese in our summer May weather. Thanks guys!

You need real food. I think it's a cute idea for a late night snack sort of thing, but I think you need real food for cocktail hour.

Have you considered sandwich/veggie trays from your local grocer? You can usually pre-order and they are already arranged; it would just be a matter of having your caterer put them out.

I've seen that done at out door weddings but with a number of other things on a buffet of treats

I like it, I think it's cute, but you need real apps. I don't understand this from a caterer.....

What kind of caterer "doesn't really offer" appetizers?

    (Answer: a bad one)

It's a local resturant called Coconut Joes. They are a grill type resturant. Really really good dinner meal, just not big on apps. They could maybe serve their chicken gumbo in small bowls so that's maybe an idea but I'll have to search pinterest some more and talk to my DOC for ideas on what to serve

A professional caterer signed off on this? They don't offer the most basic of apps like crackers/cheese/fruits/veggies -- and to add insult to injury, hey don't even offer trail mix bars? I'd take a second look at them and their longevity in the business. Trail mix bars go in the elementary school lunch box, not on serving trays at a cocktail hour. You need hot and cold apps, and enough to satisfy your guests. Put them somewhere if you love the idea (and you'll have left overs if you feed your guests properly), but please, no trail mix bars as the apps during cocktail hour. Picture it...enough said.

Maybe get apps catered from another place? My SILs did this for their wedding... different caterers for apps and meal.

I would be a little annoyed if I was offered trail mix at a wedding. That's my grab and go work snack that I buy in bulk at Costco. Not what I want to munch on with a glass of Chardonnay.

Also, I would be wary of serving loose peanuts unless you are 100% positive no one on your guest list has an allergy. Some people are so sensitive that a handshake can make them breakout. You don't want anyone to need an Epi-Pen at your wedding.

I just went to a wedding that had potato skins, shrimp skewers, bacon wrapped scallops, meatballs, fruit and veggie tray, cheese and crackers, etc. It was perfect! Think more along those lines for cocktail hour.

I agree with other people, you need to offer real food. The trail mix would be a nice add-on, but I would be annoyed if that was all that was offered.

People are expecting real food. It really is a cute idea though! Maybe add it as an extra? I know I'd be a hangry guest if all I had was cheese and crackers and trail mix at cocktail hour.

You definitely need real food. If I didn't eat at cocktail hour, a couple glasses of wine would put me on the wrong side of tipsy
