Cinco de Mayo Wedding in Mexico

Leslie, on August 7, 2019 at 6:48 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 7
Hi! We are looking at doing a destination wedding in Mexico the first week of May. We will expect most guests to make it a week long vacation of a Saturday to Saturday (May 2-9), but know some guests will make it shorter due to money and work. We are looking to get married on Monday or Tuesday that week so people can come on Saturday but only stay 3-4 nights if that's all they can do. That Tuesday will be May 5th. I know that Cinco de Mayo is not Independence Day, it commemorates a battle and is not a national holiday in Mexico. I just want to ensure I am being culturally appropriate and not offensive by having a wedding on May 5 in Mexico.

Thanks!

My FH family is from Mexico - they don't celebrate Cinco de Mayo and think it's funny that it's celebrated here (apparently it's just another day in Mexico and nothing celebrated or even memorialized). If there's one thing I've noticed about Mexicans it's that they are not easily offended and they are ALWAYS down for a party.

Thank you, Hannah! I appreciate the feedback. I know it is not celebrated in Mexico as it is in the States, but I am happy to get another opinion about the cultural appropriateness of getting married that day. It may just be a fun coincidence for my guests to make the most of!

    Hey Leslie!

It’s really nice to see that you are so conscious of the Mexican culture while planning your wedding there.

Have you ever visited Mexico before? What made you decide to have a destination wedding there?

I have actually never been there before. I have traveled to several countries, a couple of them in the Caribbean / Central America region. I have always known I wanted to do a destination wedding, so once we got engaged, I just began looking at different beach options and Mexico has SO many great options! So in doing research, we have just leaned heavily towards going to Mexico.

This is amazing! It sounds like you will get your dream wedding!

Are you having both your ceremony and reception on the beach? 🌴

I think we will do the ceremony on the beach & the reception on a little terrace right along the beach Smiley smile
