Church wedding for non members??

MissBethany67, on July 29, 2013 at 4:58 PM Posted in Planning 0 17

I am a member of a Baptist church. My church is too small for a wedding and is in a terrible location (my family and I do mission work at struggling churches and change every 3-5 years...wherever God leads us). I have called numerous churches in our area, even the church my parents were married at and NONE of them will allow my FH and I to get married there. I have explained that I am a church member and I'm not just trying to "use" the church because I'm trying to save money. I am willing to pay to use another church. The only church that said "maybe, I will discuss it with my congregation" just called me to say they will not let me use their church. I desperately want a church wedding as my FH and I are quite religious. I'm on the verge of tears. Does anyone know of a church in central AR that will allow us to marry there?

Why are they saying no?!?! You still have to pay them even if you were a member wouldn't you? How cruel!

Well isn't that a little unChristian of them...Especially if you are willing to pay...

I suggest that you consult with your minister. I am sure that you guys have a "sister" church of sorts who may be able to assist. He may even have some pastors that he goes to Convention with who might have some recommendations.

What about talking to your minister and seeing if he has any advice?

That's really strange! I am Baptist but got married in a historic episcopal church because it was sooo breathtaking and my church isn't very pretty. Ive never heard of people not allowing members.

We already tried our "sister" church....they said no as well. And to make things worse, my grandfather is the music minister of our church and the Association so far has been no help. They keep emailing suggestions of churches in our Association and those churches keep saying no. I've asked almost 20 churches!!!!

What kind of heathen are you that they are saying no????

JK of course. But that's ridiculous! They have to give you a reason why!

Did you ask "WHY" they are saying no?

What is your date? What is the time? Is it possibly because it is the Saturday before Thanksgiving when most churches have various outreach activities for the poor?

There has to be a reason beyond membership or lack thereof.

Maybe....I thought Thanksgiving was on a Thursday.

The only reason I am getting is "we only allow members of our church to use our facilities"

Would your minister perform the service at a non-church location; ie: have your ceremony and reception in the same space?

We've already discussed that option. That is our last resort. It's just one of those things....my whole life when I thought about my wedding day, I saw the ceremony in a church. And now that it's here, it looks like it isn't going to happen.

Did you try calling a UCC church or a Unitarian Society?

What about a historical church or chapel that doesn't have a congregation? Our local historical society rents out a church.
