After watching Cheapest Weddings on Netflix I'm feeling so much better about my own wedding. So many notes of what not to do. What are you all doing to keep costs down?

@M.Hand I thought that bit was awesome! Communities like their LARP group are always so supportive. I'm biased against kids that young getting married though- made that mistake myself when I was 21 LOL.
Frankly, I thought it was pretty rude that the parent didn't remove the baby. People should not allow crying babies to disrupt a ceremony. And regardless, it was part of their ceremony.
I'm watching it right now lol. Watching it does make me realize that you don't have tho spend a lot on a dress. I do agree with PP about the last minute thing being stressful. Last minute planning has nothing to do with cutting costs.

My reception will be in my grandfather-in-laws backyard. He has a large backyard and has had weddings there before. This is our biggest price cut. No reception fees! Also we are buying our wine and beer from Costco since we can bring in all our own stuff
Instead of using real fresh flowers, we’re using dried flowers. Minimal decor since the place is beautiful. We’ve gotten a TON of stuff on sale. It really adds up. We’ve saved over $600 with sales so far. We’ve having a rustic wedding in a barn with about 200 guests. I just started watching Cheaper Weddings and I have to say... I don’t feel as cheap now. Lol
@OP what really saved us money was having an off season wedding in April. Our venue has a pretty high minimum for Saturday events ($15k) but because they consider April off season there is no minimum we needed to hit. Saved us about $5k right there!

You guys mock but you’d have to have a heart of stone if you didn’t also catch some feels over old mate groom’s emotional reaction when he found out he wasn’t able to ride in down the aisle on his dirt bike. Heavy stuff there.
I just discovered this show, it makes me really sad (not at the small budgets, but the lack of family, etc sometimes) I've only seen a few episodes but I can't wait to finish it.
I also have a hard time believing making a practice wedding cake and a REAL wedding cake yourself is cheaper than just buying a cake from the grocery store...among other things...
So, I've only watched maybe the first 3 episodes, and although entertaining, I have to say it's not as big of a shit show as I thought it would be. Seems like a lot of people(not all!)are still hiring pros for food, etc. Still risky, lots of last minute stuff and online purchases(especially wedding dresses), but not as much bad hosting as I was expecting. Very entertaining though!
ETA: I feel really bad for the bride whose mom couldn't come and her FH's best man backed out. They seemed to be trying to do everything right, too.
There seems to be quite a bit of scorn heaped onto this show but they're not even bad weddings...? The Norfolk Island one in particular was charming. And the Finnish woman and guy in the Hunter Valley were great. Sometimes I feel like this forum is an exercise in group think, where if every wedding isn't some Americanised nightmare of excessive consumption and credit card debt then its an excuse for everyone to pile on.
And no, eskies (coolers or whatever) are not generally the norm at Australian weddings - the clue might be in the name of the show, 'Cheapest Weddings'... that's like asking if everyone in the US is exactly like the cast of 'Teen Mom' or 'Moonshiners'...
I only saw the first episode and it was making me cringee. The bride who barely had any guest show up to the reception. The Norfolk one was actually really pretty. Aside from all etiquette being thrown out the window everything looked beautiful
I used foam flowers instead of silk or real flowers. Making my own centerpieces. My dad is making wood slices for me. Free ceremony venue at local church.
