Change my name before or after the honeymoon?

Darby, on February 13, 2020 at 10:24 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 7

We will be married in September 2020 and the honeymoon is in Mexico, February 2021. We will book the trip before our wedding, so my name will be my current maiden name on my plane tickets. If I change my name to his last name before the honeymoon, would that make it so trying to travel with plane tickets in my maiden name is a nightmare/impossible? I haven't seen a ton of info on this specific issue so hoping someone has insights. I'm not sure if there's ways around it, and I don't travel frequently, so if it's even just as easy to update a plane ticket, let me know! I'd like to change my name ASAP after the wedding.

You would have plenty of time to change your name before your honeymoon, but you should book the tickets in your married name so that it matches your passport and ID, or just want until after the honeymoon to change anything.

Whatever you book your trip with has to match your passport. I'm getting married in September and booked a trip for spring and I put down what my married name will be. my travel agent said as long as what you booked with what matches your passport you will be fine. When you buy plane tickets and book resorts you don't have to provide any proof of name. Unfortunately airlines and resorts won't change names just because you're married. I would book everything with what your future name will be

That should be plenty of time. Getting a new passport should take 8 weeks maximum but you can expedite it to 2 weeks. I would book the flight in your married name if you are sure you want to change it before you go. The most important thing is just that your passport matches the name on your ticket

Wait until after. You will likely not be able to get your new passport in time, and your passport will need to match your other documents.

The name on your passport needs to match the name on your airline ticket. If you book in your married name and your passport doesn’t come in time, you’ll likely need to pay a change fee to the airline to change the name on your airline ticket. I’d just book in your maiden name. You can start the process to change your name with social security and your department of transportation and all that, just hold off on changing your passport until you return from the honeymoon. If you do not currently have a passport, pretty sure you’ll need it for Mexico, so get it now in your current name. You have 12 months from the date issued to do a complimentary passport “correction” to update the name to your married name.

Change your name, just keep your passport in your maiden name until after you get back from Mexico. You just need your passport (because you’re going out of the country) to match what’s on your plane ticket.
