Catholic/Baptist/Christian wedding advice.....

Erin, on August 11, 2011 at 5:19 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 6

My FH is Roman Catholic, I am Baptist. Will a Priest come and preform the wedding if it's NOT in a catholic church? My sister's FIL is a pastor of New Hope Christian Church. I've thought about asking him to do the ceremony if a priest can't/won't do it outside of the church. I don't mind it in a Catholic church and I don't mind if it's not in a Catholic church. To incorporate the catholic part into it, I would like a priest. HELP/ADVICE!!!!!!

Hmm I think a priest would perform outside of the church, it doesnt hurt to just call and ask, so you dont have any worries about it. But generally if you have a priest they require you to do couples counseling, or testing on knowledge of marriage/religion and what not.

Erin...Under normal circumstances, in mosts diocese, it is very rare that a priest will marry outside of the brick and mortars church building. It has been done, of course, but it is rare. The priest would need approval from the bishop. On the other hand, sometimes, in a more "laid back" parish, a priest would agree to do it.

Sometimes parishes are like feudalism. The pastor of that parish is the one in charge.

Im catholic and as far as I know Catholic Priests can't perform outside church; you might heard someone who has done it but those marriages are not recognized by the vatican. You might want to talk to the priest before you do that. If you are not catholic I believe you are allowed to have your ceremony there but you need to take classes. My best advice talk to the church and priest before you make a decision.

To my understanding as I'm Catholic, a priest will not marry outside of the church. It must be held inside the church walls to be recognized....

I've been to a few weddings not in a Catholic church where a priest was there to help out, give a blessing etc...he didn't perform the marriage but if you just want to incorporate Catholicism into the wedding then that would work. When meeting with our Catholic priest, he was open to even having another Catholic priest in a different church do the ceremony in his church instead of him. I've also been to a wedding in a Catholic church where an outside officiant was there to help and give a blessing. All of these examples have happened in different states...cities..you get my point. Just ask! A priest will not actually perform a marriage outside of the Catholic church though...just an FYI.

No. Most will not even perform a wedding if it's not a member of their own parish. And there are some hoops to jump through before even that happens.
