Catholic Wedding Attire??

SimplePlease, on June 21, 2013 at 11:58 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11

So I have picked out a beautiful strapless dress, problem is I am getting married In a Catholic Church. I thought this was fine, but my mom said this morning she thought you had to have your shoulders covered in a Catholic Church. Can anyone confirm or deny this for me please? My bridesmaids and flowergirl dresses show shoulder as well.

It depends on the church but when my BFF got married in a Catholic church she had to have cap sleeves made for her dress.

This also translates to other sacraments as well. I know for Confirmation the candidates and sponsors needed to be appropriately attired (i.e. no bare shoulders) for the mass.

Sometimes they do let you get away with a shawl or shrug but I'd check with the church that you are having your ceremony at.

I just got married in a Catholic church (2 weeks ago) and I wore a strapless dress (with cleavage!!!) I have also been to many many Catholic weddings and have seen all sorts of different style dresses! I think that is probably an old tradition Smiley smile you will be fine!

You may want to verify with the church you are getting married in. I was a bridesmaid in my Mom's wedding and we had to have shawls to cover our shoulders for the church. This was 10 years ago but it's better to know now than find out day of.

Like the other ladies said, it depends on the church. My church allows strapless.

It depends on the church. Mine didn't have anything in their PDF about preparing to marry at their parish and no one said anything to two of my BMs who had strapless dresses...not that we had anything to cover them up with anyway.

In Europe that tradition holds, not so much in the US. Check with your priest. My church also allows strapless, but I prefer to have my shoulders covered when I enter a church. Not sure why. it's certainly not something anyone beat into me LOL

It does depend on the church

Lately I have seen cousins with bare shoulder and straps (not sleeves) like thick-ish straps (this seemed to be popular most had this) only a couple with little boleros to cover up

I have seen BM with strapless, one shoulder and straps only one with a bolero

It really does depend on what church

I get what Paris is saying but I haven't really noticed it (all these weddings have been in Ireland and Germany)

It depends on the church, FSIL has a strapless gown and her church is allowing it.

As others have stated: check with your priest. 90% of priests down here ask to see the wedding dress before the day to determine "appropriateness" and it's a regular thing to ask guests to "dress modestly".

Everyone is correct- it depends on your specific church. I wore a strapless dress and it was 100% fine with our Priest.
