Catholic ceremony music

Tammy, on February 23, 2012 at 9:04 AM Posted in Planning 0 7

We will have a ceremony outside of mass, and I'm curious about music options, including procession/entrance, exit, psalm. Are there any other songs in a ceremony w/o mass? Would love to hear what others are using...

I actually spoke with our organist last night regarding this matter. She said that we only really need prelude, processional, psalm, sign of peace and recessional. I basically just told her to pick songs and come to me to finalize it because I don't have a preference other than Canon in D Major being played when I walk in.

I'm having a Catholic ceremony outside of mass. Our church had a list of selections we could make. I honestly don't remember what we chose... I think we're doing Air, Trumpet Voluntary & two others. If your church does not offer this you should check this out:

Hey Catholic bride!! It all depends on your church what is allowed versus what is not...my church allows only hymns in the liturgy for during the ceremony, and then in the prelude I can include music outside of the liturgy, but they have to be religious and approved in advance. Some churches let anything that isn't profanity go, and some allow only liturgical music all the time. So you need to check with your church!

Here's our songs (we are doing a full mass):

    Prelude

Walk By Faith - Jeremy Camp

    By My Side

When God Made You - Newsong & Natalie Grant

I Will Be Here - Steven Curtis Chapman

Open the Eyes of my Heart Lord - Paul Baloche

    Irish Wedding Song

    Processional

    Trumpet Tune - Jeremiah Clarke

    Trumpet Voluntary - Jeremiah Clarke

    Responsorial Psalm

    #125 Psalm 128:

“May the Lord bless us, May the Lord protect us, all the days, all the days of our life.”

    Gospel Acclamation

    Celtic Alleluia

    Preparation of the Gifts

    You Are Mine

    Communion

    Lord of All Hopefulness

    Ave Maria

    Recessional

    The Lord of the Dance

The Lord of the Dance Instrumental

My aunt and uncle are being our cantors and musicians, so we have more songs than usual (and a longer prelude than usual), but you don't have to have a prelude at all. Or you can just have the organist/pianist play some instrumentals as the guests are walking in. All that you NEED is processional, recessional, and psalm. You can also do a thing called an "entrance song" which is after the processional and has a refrain for the congregation to sing along.

@Katie... are your musicians doing your processional songs, or are you using any prerecorded?

I am not using any prerecorded...it is all "live." So those prelude songs are listed by their original artists (except for the two that I haven't been able to find yet), but my aunt and uncle are likely changing a lot of the keys, tempos, instruments, etc...they are very talented musicians and I chose the songs for their lyrical content, so I know I can trust them to do whatever with them Smiley smile

The processional is being played on the organ by my organist (a different lady than my aunt and uncle since neither of them does the piano/organ). She is going to play Trumpet Tune in a loop for as long as needed and then transition into Trumpet Voluntary for my Dad and I.

And then everything else of course will be a combination of the organ/piano and our two cantors (and they play some guitar and flute)
