Catering Question-- Better food or save money?

Emily, on April 7, 2021 at 8:52 PM Posted in Planning 0 18

First post here! Getting married October 1, 2022 in Milwaukee, WI. We reached out to 2 catering companies and had a tasting for each. We are having a hard time deciding which one we should go with.

Caterer A: decent food, nothing special, and seems to get more options for the buffet/cocktail hour (example: 7 appetizers, 3 entrees, 3 sides).

Caterer B: definitely better food in my opinion, more limited (4 appetizers, 3 entrees, 2 sides), and $2,000 more expensive.

We are estimating around 100 for guest count. Both have amazing customer service, linen/china rentals, and well known & liked in our area, so very comparable there.

Is it worth the extra money for more delicious food or should we "settle" for the decent food & spend elsewhere?

Thanks!

P.S. We are paying for everything ourselves and the extra expense is DOABLE but not sure if it's worth it!

I vote for Caterer B. I was all about the guest experience at my wedding - including food — so I spent more to make sure the food was awesome!! It was so worth the expense. I’ve been married for almost 3 months and my guests are still raving about the food (so much so that one of my aunts has called the chef to figure out what kind of cheese was on the fruit and cheese tray and to see if he would share his recipe for the crab cakes. Lol!)

One of the things many people say they remember most as a guest is whether the food was good or bad. In that case, go for the better food if you can swing it. Unless the appetizers are better at the less expensive caterer, you don't need that many. But you shouldn't go broke either. Are there any restaurants in your area you love that offer corporate catering? Those tend to be excellent food, very large quantities, at a much lower price. You would need to hire staff on thumbtack.com

I would go with option B. Guests remember very few things about weddings and one of those things is food so I would definitely recommend picking the better of the two caterers.

I would go with the second option-better food! It is one of the few things your guests will remember for years to come- whether it’s good or bad! Plus, FH and I are total foodies, so food was at the top of the list for us

Wedding food gets a bad rep and I can guarantee you that your guests will remember your wedding for the wrong reasons if the food isn’t up to scratch. Definitely go with the better quality food.

I’m an outlier but I’d save the money and spend elsewhere. Wedding food is usually average at best, so I never expect great food. Also you said it was better food but you didn’t say it was amazing. If the first option is decent I’d save my money!

Guests love good food & drinks! Cut extras like photo booth, late night snack, favors, printables like programs, and downsize decor. Get the better caterer!!!

Def. option B! If there's one thing guests will remember and comment the most one, it's the food. Spend the extra money, get the better food, and cut cost elsewhere if needed! Smiley smile

Pretty much the only thing I remember from weddings we’ve attended is whether the food was good so I’d vote for option B!

I 100% think the extra expense for better quality and a few less options is worth it.

I would go with the cheaper one because it has more options (coming from a person with a limited diet and appreciates options)

Definitely splurge on the food! If the first caterer was only so-so during the tasting, where they are trying to earn your business, it will likely be worse when made in bigger quantities for the event!

For us the food was one of the most important parts and people will always remember if the food was good or not. I would personally go with spending more on the food to make sure it’s amazing! You can always find a different caterer tho that is cheaper? We are getting catering from a bbq restaurant and it’s literally half the price than through a wedding caterer. Maybe look into other food options!

I LOVE food, so as a bride AND as a guest, I would definitely prefer Caterer B if you can afford it Smiley smile
