Catering for Backyard BBQ Wedding

UofMichiganGirl, on June 4, 2015 at 5:42 PM Posted in Planning 0 16

We are having a laid back backyard bbq wedding and want to serve the hamburgers/hotdogs and nacho bar for the food. Our theme is Michigan Football so it fits right in. Think "Stadium Food".... After pricing out what it would cost to do everything ourselves, on top of the time we would have to spend, we are wondering if we should just cater it.

We have a budget of $1200 for 100 people. We would want some appetizers too (even just sliced meats and cheese/veggies).

Do you think that's possible or am I way optimistic that we could find a caterer for that?

Thanks ladies for your input.

I totally think you can serve the type of food you want to on that budget! Don't forget sides and an option for vegetarians. Think: picnic-style food.

Contact some caterers and see what their prices are for the food you want. It may be possible for you!

I would get it catered. For 100 people that is a LOT of hamburgers and hot dogs. You would need a big set up, lots of chafing dishes, a system to keep the hot foods hot and the cold items cold, etc etc. Not to mention staff since you don't want your family working the whole event. I would check out local BBQ places...you would be surprised at the deals you can get!

Thanks ladies. @annakay15, wow I didn't even think of vegetarians. Any thoughts on vegetarian dishes that would compliment the picnic/bbq theme? hmmmm... now my wheels are spinning.

I would definitely get a caterer! You don't want your friends and family working all day. For veg, you could also do pasta salads, mac and cheese, and black bean burgers.

    Go blue!

You could do vegetarian baked beans, grilled portobello mushrooms (instead of burgers), vegetable kabobs, cole slaw etc.

Thanks again! I've contacted some local caterers and hopefully they can work within my budget. I just recently went to a reception only event and they served ONLY hor d'oeuvres and it was so much food we were stuffed. Wondering if that's an option too without our budget. I would do very heavy hor d'oeuvres to make sure everyone had enough food.

We had our engagement party catered for 600 dollars and that was for 50 people. You can definitely get it catered within your budget and it will be so much less work for you to do and have to worry about. Love the theme!

Good deal! I was going to suggest a caterer renting a grill and setting up in the yard. Been to a few parties like that. Fun times!

I'm glad you found a caterer! For the vegetarians, I'd grill Portobello mushrooms and use them instead of burger patties. They are delicious and filling and this way they don't have to eat carrot sticks and zucchini for dinner.
