Casual looking invite, but more formal venue

Keri, on June 24, 2019 at 10:41 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 4
Hi everyone! I've been reading that formality of the wedding invitation should match the venue. I wanted a more nontraditional/modern/fun invite, so I chose below. Is it too casual for the wedding venue? The venue is pretty modern and industrial surrounded by windows overlooking downtown Grand Rapids. I am thinking cocktail attire, but don't have a way to communicate this. I'm not planning on having a wedding website so nowhere will dress code be mentioned. Will people look up venue/ask through word of mouth? Is it really worth having a wedding website? I know at the end of the day people will wear what they are comfortable in and it doesn't matter too much. Just think jeans are too informal and evening gowns too formal. Attaching pictures so you can see wedding invite(not real info) and venue. Any insight appreciated!

Some people may look up the venue or ask around or check the website, but not everyone. I would maybe look for a slightly more formal-looking invite or just put cocktail attire somewhere in the corner. I know it is against etiquette, but if you don't think your crowd would be offended by it, I would just do that. Or you can include a separate details card that has that information along with other details like hotel block info, directions, parking info, whatever.

You could designate attire on an invite. I've seen it before, especially if you do want it to be cocktail attire. But keep in mind of course not everyone will follow it anyway. The venue you chose is nice!

With your invite design & 2:30 pm start time, it would be best to include “Cocktail attire requested” or guests might assume it’s casual.

What a fun invite & venue, by the way!
