Cash the checks in a timely manner please!!!

Tracey, on October 29, 2009 at 9:55 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 33

I went to a wedding on the 16th of October and didn't have time to put cash in the card since it was a Friday wedding so I wrote a check. They still haven't cashed it!!! Please everyone, deposit checks as soon as possible after your wedding!!!

LOL that's so rude!! I have a feeling I will be on the other end and will be cashing that check the second we're back from the honeymoon... they aren't still on their honeymoon are they? It's been awhile so I doubt it but some people take 2 week long honeymoons...

Well assuming we have a honeymoon we're going to be leaving right after the wedding... and we'll only be gone for 4-5 days-- a week tops. I don't think that's too long to deposit a check. I would say that the person mentioned in the above post has waited too long to cash theirs!

I know they didn't go on a honeymoon so I'm getting a little annoyed. I know there's no problem with the funds in my account but now I'm worrying I was in such a rush I forgot to sign it or something but I wish they would let me know! I'm going to only do cash from now on!!!

I'm having a destination wedding, so checks are going to have to wait until we return home about a week later.

A week is fine but we're going on 2 weeks now ... and I understand if they left immediately for a honeymoon but oh, well. I'll just have to wait and see!

Who did you write the check out to? We had a couple people complain that we hadn't cashed their checks yet but it was because they had written the check to BOTH of us and it became a nightmare to cash them. I had started the process of changing to my married name but I had to wait for the new driver's license to get mailed to me and then after that I had to get the account name changed, all of this took time, and it was after we'd gotten back from our honeymoon. SO yes it took about a month before I COULD cash any check that were written to BOTH of us! I never thought of that as a wedding guest before myself. So now when I give a check at a wedding I write it out ONLY to the groom because I know his name will be the same after the wedding. Recently a friend said mine was the ONLY check she didn't have a problem cashing. I don't know if this is the case here but I'm just saying there are good reasons that might be holding them up from cashing it. I'm sure they're not trying to be rude

I am having that same issue right now. I went to a wedding the first weekend in Oct and wrote ONLY the groom the check because like Laura said I knew it would take time for the bride to change her name. They still have not cashed my check. Luckily I am good with my finances and take into account that check but its still annoying.

Our wedding is on a Saturday. We are leaving for our honeymoon on the Monday following so we will make sure the checks are deposited before we leave that Monday.

I used to work at a bank, and if there is a check written to 2 ppl for cash, these were the following rules in cashing a check like this:

    1. Both parties (the 2 ppl that the check is written to) have to be present and show proper ID

    2. they both need to sign the back of the check

But then again, it depends if they are just deposting into thier joint account, if so then they don't need ID or anything. Then again, every bank has different guidlines for this... but that was just at my bank.

We went a two week long honeymoon and havent cashed all the cheques yet. the ones we havent cashed are made out ot Sarah & Brandon halliwell (my name isnt chnaged yet so the bank wont let me deposot them) an dthe otehr half is just made out to Sarah Halliwell, which agin cant be deposited until my name is chnaged. so ya it does suck but i think that a reasonable excuse!!

It isnt rude to NOT cash a check right away. often people go on honeymoons right after the wedding and cant cash it. and then if the name on the check it to MR and Mrs_____ its almost impossible to cash it because of the length of time it takes to the marrige cert back and get the propwer name chanegs on an ID that will allow the bank to cash it.

make checks out to the groom or bride only so that they dont have to deal with this drama when they get back from the honeymoon.

I am with Laura My cousin couldn't cash her check for a few months after the wedding due to people writing to Mrs and Mr Hayse. Man what would have happened if she decided not to change her name lol that would have been fun. When it come to me and I can't give money I either send to one or they other.

Yep, i'm siding with laura here...not just that, keep in mind, that some banks, require personal checks be held...our bank, will only release checks under $100 immediately, anything over that, they release just $50 and can hold the balance of the check, for up to 30 freakin days...we learned that the hard way last christmas...talk about angry! and of course, when writing a check to a newly married couple, either write it to the one you know the most, or write it in the groom's name...another thing, if you're mainly friends with the bride, make sure you write her MAIDEN name on the check, because her account won't be changed until after her wedding, and her bank may either refuse to cash/deposit it, or may hold it until after the name change comes through. friends that just got married, ended up having to ask her grandmother to take her check back, and send a money order, because their bank(BOA) refused to cash it, since it was in 2 names, and they didn't have a joint account yet...

The name thing is a HUGE issue and people dont realize it when they write checks. I got lucky because I personally know several people at the bank where I go and so does my husband. We were able to cash everything only because we added him to my bank account, showed them a copy of the marriage license which they filed and we both had to sign every check. If they didnt know us personaly they wouldnt have let us do it. Credit union banks are the worse because they might take it if its written out to Mike and Alanna Guy, but if its Mr and Mrs Guy, I would have to wait for my new license which im getting friday. Since you know they didnt go on a honeymoon and if you dont think the name thing is an issue, call them to make sure your card/check wasnt lost. I had a lot that got stuck in with gift bags because they fell out of the basket during transport and we waited over a week to open the gifts. Could still be in the trunk too. lol
