Carnations

Christina, on February 1, 2016 at 4:14 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 26

I've heard that a lot of people dislike carnations at weddings. Why so? I think they're so gorgeous and I would want them in my wedding unless there's really some reason as to why they're hated so much.

For me personally... They remind me of the giant arrangements you see at wakes and funerals. They are used a lot for those since they're a cheaper flower and can be used as filters.

I love carnations too, I love the way they look, I love the way they smell, I love the colors. I don't know why they shouldn't be in a wedding. Do what makes you happy

Carnations are incredibly inexpensive which is why people avoid them. They're considered a cheap flower. They make great fillers though and some people love them.

My gram loved carnatioms, so I thought about having them in my wedding. But my favorite flowers are roses, and I definitely want to carry them. They wouldn't look well with carnations, though. So I decided on the roses instead. Roses are more often seen in weddings, anyway.

I don't like carnations because I have been a ballerina my entire life and that (and roses) are generally what you receive after a performance. I would associate them with that. But if it weren't for that I would probably love them. They are "cheap" but still beautiful!

I usually don't like them, and others don't because they are perceived as cheap, but I've seen some really pretty arrangements done with ONLY carnations (usually in the weirder colors, like deep burgundy) that are gorgeous.

Funny story....I did a wedding for a bride who's mother had passed away, (not the funny part) and she did all the centerpieces with pink carnations.

I started to write her ceremony, and we got to the part where I'd talk briefly about her mother, and she said her mom loved pink flowers. I wrote a bit about the romance of pink...blah blah blah, how her mother was such a romantic....blah blah blah...

Then we did the script edit. She let me know that her mom was self described, proud battle ax, (not surprising to anyone there...), a really tough broad who thought anyone who spent money on flowers OTHER than carnations was a fool because carnations last forever. And her fave color was pink.

Of course that went into the ceremony and it was one of the most laughed-at parts of the whole thing, lol!

My sorority flower is a rose carnation (Phi Mu!) but whenever I see them, I think of school performances or recitals like Ashley. I will be having one rose carnation hidden in my bouquet for sorority tradition, but other than that my personal preference is not to have them. I think it's all a matter of personal choice and what makes you happy! It's your big day, if you love them, incorporate them!

My personal feeling with carnations, is that they are a high school prom flower. You see carnations used so much at prom, that they have entered the category of prom flower for me. I do think they can have a place in arrangements, but I would not want them in a boutonniere or corsage.

I love carnations. I never did stuff to get flowers during my years so I don't associate anything with them. Look on pinterest, they have amazing set ups with them.

Carnations aren't my favorite. They remind of me a diner.. The ones around here always have carnations in a coke bottle on each table. That said, they can definitely be transformed into pretty floral arrangements. My florist suggested using them in place of peonies. She put a bunch of them super close together and I was surprised how much they looked like the real deal!

I didn't think I liked them just because most of the ways I've seen them used are in giant puff balls of flowers lolz. But now that I've started looking at the colors I want, I really like them BECAUSE they are cheap and look/smell nice lolz.

I don't like the way they look, and they remind me of funerals and those Memorial Day silk wreaths you see at Walmart every year.

I'm not a flower person. Of any type. They're just pointless to me. I'm having floral bouquets and that's about it. I honestly don't even know what they're going to look like. So I don't really think I'm the best for this post BUT it's your wedding. If you like/love them then have them. I'm sure it's workable

There's no traditional reason for them not to be used, just that they are fairly cheap as PPs have said and so they get a bad rap. The benefit is that, as cheap as they are, you could go CRAZY with them for the same budget. I've also seen them being bundled together to make a mock peony: http://www.fiftyflowers.com/blog/new-carnations-and-how-to-create-faux-peonies/

I am doing carnations and roses. At first, I didn't like the idea of carnations, but I looked at a few different ideas and really fell in love. It doesn't hurt that they are also budget friendly! Do whatever will make you happy. Smiley smile
