Caricatures for Wedding Favors

MoSunshine, on November 16, 2015 at 4:21 PM Posted in Planning 0 24

So...I saw someone post about unique wedding favors and I clicked on the link for trending favors..and saw caricatures.. and me AND my FH think its super cool. Since we will have about 145 invited guests...and each artist can do between 10-15 drawings an hour, we are thinking to meet the demand to have two artist for about two to three hours.

But my concern is...I don't want alot of people standing in line to get a drawing instead of being on the dance floor..so has anyone offered this to their guest in lieu of a photobooth?

Also, how did you space it out? My initial thought was to have them drawing right after the ceremony while we are taking pictures. But then do we have them pause for dinner, feed them and then have them start up again?

Can anyone help? lol. Me and FH really want to do this, but we want to do it right so we don't waste any money.

This is an AWESOME idea. The only concern is how are the people going to store them without the charcoal getting smudged or all over everything? Will you have frames for everyone? That would incur a lot of cost.

Such a fun idea and I'm going to stay tuned to other people's suggestions...

Great idea!! Definitely have them start during cocktail hour. Also, keep in mind not all your guests will have it done, and couples/families and even groups of friends will probably sit together

Yes! I have a friend who does Them at weddings and have been to 2 weddings where he has worked. There was never a long line as people just waited until he or his partner were done to walk over. They stored the finished drawings in clear plastic bags.

This is such a cute idea! Hopefully your artists will have some kind of system for people waiting so there aren't long lines.. I wouldn't want to spend a wedding waiting my turn for a caricature, as cute as they are.

Elyse had a caricature artist at her wedding-- maybe she can comment?

I attended a wedding where the brides had a Caricature Artist and a Photo Booth. They didn't start the Artist until after dinner had been served. It took a bit for people to catch on, but once it did, he was able to complete most in about 5 mins. He provided bags and the paper was branded with the couple's name and wedding date. RE: Line, most people just danced and waited for a lull or distracted themselves with the photobooth. There was never a line of more than 3 couples. I'd say the wedding had about 80 people and the majority had their portrait drawn.

I loved the idea and mine hung on my fridge until I moved recently.

I photographed a wedding this summer that had an artist doing caricatures. That artist was drawing from the moment the first person came in until her time was up. People were in line the ENTIRE time. GREAT favor!!!! IMO, your guests will take full advantage of this so the more artists you have the better. Make sure to have a sign that lets guests know how long he/she/they will be there.

I think it's a great idea for a favor. I would probably get 3 artists if you can afford to. Assuming you have a 5 hour reception and every guest gets one, they would have to do about 30 an hour between the artists (15 each). Having three would allow the artists to take a break (which I'm guessing is in their contract) and will allow for less wait time.

ETA: Just re-read your post and saw you only want them working for 2-3 hours. In that case, I would definitely say to hire three artists if you can.

Yes, I had one. Kind of a unique situation though as mine was "surprise" from my inlaws. I actually had my dad tell me about it so I did know it was happening. He started after dinner. I had 93 guests but I'm not sure how many got them done. I do remember being on the dance floor though and wondering where everyone was only to look over and see a crazy long line for the artist. I was not happy about that, but I've never been to a wedding with a photo booth so I can't compare. I did have one friend complain about the line. Rude, considering she knew it wasn't my choice to have one.

I was also kind of annoyed that he had a tip jar out. I didn't know about that until after the wedding. I have no problem with guests tipping bartenders, but for some reason this just rubbed me the wrong way. I know it sounds hypocritical.

I think you should be good with 2.

I considered doing this at our wedding but we had a very small wedding and it just didn't work with the way the day was laid out. As a guest I would be so thrilled if this was offered. Personally, I think the best thing would be to have tubes to put them in so that people don't have to worry about them getting messed up before they leave. You can buy them in bulk and they aren't too pricey.

@Elyse I think I know why you mean, the caricatures didn't come with the venue...and are already being paid a fee that they themselves set. The bartenders on the other hand are not. I think I will give my day of coordinator the heads up to keep an eye out for a tip jar and make sure she handles it of a tip jar comes out.

Thank you so much for the advice everyone it has really been helpful! We really think this will be a hit at the wedding as well. A favor that won't be left behind!
