Cards against humanity reception

FH and I were wedding chatting, and he came up with 2 tables for Cards Against Humanity. I was so proud of him for thinking of such an amazing idea! And it is one of the highlights of our reception, that our guests are really looking forward to! I am so excited!

What about Apple to Apples vs Cards Against Humanity? They're similar but the first is rated G and well, you know the what the other is rated.

I love the game but I don't think it's appropriate for a wedding in any way. . Shouldn't people be drinking, conversing, dancing? Why do they need games, especially games with the potential to be very offensive?

I've been at weddings with lawn games. Small children and drunk groomsmen play them.

I've been at weddings with board and card games. No one touches them.

Ideally, people come to weddings to hang with people the know and meet people they don't, and of course, celebrate with you. I don't see the point in throwing a giant, expensive party and having 20 people playing their own game.

I would be happy if I were a guest at your reception. It's just a fun game! Most of my family and friends would absolutely love that idea! It's my grandparents and great grandmother who would get offended.

I will now be adding that to our after party though. Thank you for the inspiration!

We like CAH but there are a few cards that we find awful and unfunny (Auschwitz, the jokes about harming sex workers, and there's at least one that's usually played so it makes a racist joke but I don't remember what it is off the top of my head), so when we play we just request that those cards are removed from the deck for the duration of the game. One of our friends has a set that's basically permanently us-friendly because we play with them so much.

I disagree with Celia a bit -- everyone played the board & card games at our wedding. Most people opted for Timeline or Fluxx. Our wedding was less than 20 people, though, and most of them didn't really like to dance -- it's a matter of knowing your crowd.

No no...it's fine for small family gatherings but a wedding? Try apples to apples and if you don't have music get music

I really hate CAH. It's not that I'm offended, I just genuinely don't find it funny, and it's tedious to the extreme, I love games in general- ever since CAH came out that's the ONLY game that everyone else wants to play at parties, and it really sucks.

What's with everyone's uptight Grandma's though? My grandma's 83- everyone in our family has kids super young. I have a folder on my email account labeled 'Dick jokes from Grandma'. She forwards joke emails to her friends and family all the time in typical senior fashion, but they are usually dirty jokes, and it cracks me up.

My Grandma's pretty cool though. She used to do computer programming in the mid 80's, and she very briefly became a cosmetologist and created her own make-up line.

You know your Grandma. If she cusses like a sailor or regularly sends dick jokes to you, I'm sure CAH isn't going to offend her. It will just annoy her and make her slightly sad.

Are you 101% sure your families understand the extremity and explicitness of this game? Are you sure they're not just being polite?

I have played CAH with lots of people in many settings, I have a good sense of humor and am never offended by the game, but there have been times when things took a dark turn. There's laughing-because-it's-so-awful and then there's laughing-because-you're-actually-super-racist. An open bar makes this way more likely. I remember a party where a card about race was played (part of the game) and the conversation turned into making lots of very offensive racist jokes (not part of the game), and I was very uncomfortable because I realized we weren't just playing an offensive game- many of us (seasoned CAH players) were genuinely offended by the actual beliefs of the people sitting around me and it was very uncomfortable.

People who don't know the game might get roped into playing and not realize they're going to be offended/made uncomfortable by the game. People who are offended by this kind of thing are likely to overhear the raucous reading of the cards even if they're not playing.

Just be sure you REALLY know what you're doing. If you have friends who you suspect would take things too far, don't do it. And, don't take this the wrong way, if you're sure nobody at your wedding cares about genuinely offensive mindsets and actual racism (and other forms of inappropriate and offensive perspectives), maybe this won't be a problem for you.
