Cancelled Wedding sadness

After this years election, my fiancé and I decided to forgo our big wedding plans, and elope in Colorado. After this years election, my fiancé and I decided to forgo our big wedding plans, and elope in Colorado. I just sent the official withdrawal emails to our vendors, and while I know this is the best decision for us, I can't help but be a little sad. We will still have our day, and I am still wearing my dress, but it is sad! I posted on here the day after the election, & received so many positive comments to this idea. Now that I've decided to go another way, I wish all of you future brides the day of your dreams, no matter how you do it! For us, we have decided to elope next fall with ~15 family members and our 2 dogs, and then throw a big party back on the east coast with our extended family and friends the following summer (hopefully saving us $$$ we can use in other ways). Who knows where the next 4 years will take us, but remember to look out for one another. Remember what's really important, and have an amazing life filled with love and support!

    @Katie

    There is literally no chance that Clinton was going to build deportation camps for white Christians or force them to register so that the government could target them more effectively. Therefore, comparing the treatment of Christians under Clinton to what minorities are currently dealing with is the biggest load of nonsense I have ever seen from an individual who is usually quite reasonable. The persecution complex of those with all the power is ridiculous.

    I work at a girls' school with a large international population, and we've had more than 30 families withdraw their daughters since the election. Some are Muslim families; others are worried their daughters will be targeted by anti-immigration activists. Others are just protest withdrawals, because they wanted their daughters educated in countries that value tolerance. OP is very right to be concerned about jobs that involve international students. Thirty girls equals two full classes here, and the only reason they aren't planning lay-offs (yet) is that FH and I have let them know that we'll be relocating in June and therefore moving after this school year.

    @jacky - we're not spending ALL our wedding budget on donations and travel! of course we are going to save most of it for home buying and family planning! We initially started our planning by thinking small (eloping in Ireland was the first plan, actually) then we got pressured from family and friends to do the big day and just committed, but now post election Im coming back around to our original idea of small! It just doesn't make sense for us to go into debt for one day (it never did, but now with the future of my job and our country so uncertain, it feels better to hold on to our money) We're still excited (even more so about inviting the people we WANT there, as opposed to the people we felt pressure to invite) and honestly, stress levels have gone way, way down Smiley smile

    If you elope now and things turn out better than expected, you could always have your big wedding farther down the road :-) Be brave, you are not alone!

    @Rebecca, best of luck! I can understand and appreciate your decision. It's uncertain times, especially given your jobs. Please don't mind the rude comments at the top of the post, people can be so misinformed and judgmental. You didn't deserve that.

    What TF are you talking about @Cindy? BeachDreams *specifically* said she wasn't making assumptions about OP or her partner! She was saying that LBGT felt the election results deeply, in her experience. She was not being homophobic. Please re-read and make sure you've read things correctly before making comments alluding to someone being homophobic. Wow.

    Speaking of showing hate. Look in the mirror.

    @Cindy you should probably not read for the sole purpose of getting defensive. Each of @BeachDreams' comments was in defense of OP and her decision to change plans. Calm it down buttercup.

    I totally get that, Rebecca. Of course, you can do whatever you want with your own money, and I know exactly how you feel about the stress level. As I said, I'm going through my own wedding woes right now and sometimes emotions get the best of me. I'm sorry, I may have sounded rude in my comment, but that wasn't my intention at all. But it's hard to tell someone's tone in text. Again, I hope you have a beautiful (elopement) wedding Smiley smile ETA: spelling
