Can you ADD a train to your dress??

TashaMac, on July 28, 2016 at 5:55 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 27

So as some of you learned today, I found a dress for $60!!! But I was wondering, is there such a thing as adding a train. I love the dress but thinking of ways to jazz it up a little. A lot of you said a blinged out belt/sash.. I agree, but what about adding a train???

Honestly, the best person to direct this question to is a seamstress....

You should consult a seamstress. I sort of looked into this way back before I started seriously dress shopping because I was hell bent on a pink dress (I changed my mind.) You can have a removable train added, but IMO those look terrible. The easiest way would be to add an overskirt with a train, but that will only work on certain dresses, and you run into issues with matching fabric/color/patterns if you have lace. So yeah, seamstress.

Thanks guys!! I'll definitely consult a seamstress, was just wondering if anyone had tried or witnessed it.

    @Jenny...BYE.

I'll see if I can find a picture -- it was pretty awesome. I found this AMAZING twinkly velvet orange fabric, and it was kind of like a body suit with flappy scales and then a stuffed tail. It's probably been destroyed by now, sadly. The only person who could fit in it was super tiny, and odd sized, hardly used costumes don't tend to last long in theaters.

I second the long veil option. It will give the illusion without altering your dress.

Oh god, I'm the worst...I have no pictures of this damn fish costume on my facebook anywhere!! I think it's 'cause I'm no longer friends with the actress who wore it (I'm marrying her ex.)

This costume was fun, though. It also bit the dust a few years ago.

I do sewing and have done a gown before (sewing mostly cosplay) and I think that a cathedral veil will give the feel you're going for and be nicer and less stress.

Like already discussed, with adding a train you have to match fabric, color, and embellishment and it's hard to add something as big and important detail as a train and make it look as if that was how the dress was intended rather than an add on. Double check with a seamstress if you still want though!

I would also say wearing a really long veil could give the illusion of a train! Or you could wear a slip that has poofiness at the bottom to add volume but not length.

If you wear a really long veil then take it off after the ceremony, it'll be like you had a wardrobe change.

OP I wouldn't add the train if I were you. Your dress is already a beautiful shape! As other have suggested, try a veil!

@FutureMrsJay awww! No fish! The other costume is cool though.

It depends on the dress. My aunt had a removable train for her wedding. Her dress was like an evening gown and then the train had a belt that was tied around her waist. Couldn't tell if it wasn't

part of the dress until she took it off.

The only way you're going to be anywhere near it looking even just okay is if you bought the exact same dress again, and a seamstress was able to use that to construct what would likely be a tiny train, because of all the fabric matching and such that would have to be done since its lace. Plus seams would need to be hidden. By the time you're all in and done, you're looking at more than just going and buying a new bridal gown, and you still could have subpar results.

So possible? Yes. Worth it? Highly unlikely.

I've done a lot of intricate cosplay sewing and made my SIL'a wedding dress, but I wouldn't even consider the alterations you're suggesting.

Wait, sidenote, why are we calling it a fish costume? I saw her dress on her previous post and I thought it was beautiful.
