This is what my dress pattern looks like and I’m not sure if it has too much white on it to not wear to a wedding. I also have a black dress and the wedding is cocktail attire, but I have heard you should not wear black to a wedding.

That is not a white dress. Anyone who gets upset that microscopic polka dots are upstaging and disrespecting a bride has their own problems to deal with. As long as the invitation mentions semi formal/cocktail dress code, it is perfectly acceptable. Wear it and have a great time.

Also if black is that taboo, all men would be turned away at the door unless they were in colored suits. You never see it happen because it’s an old wives take that people don’t follow anymore because they realized there is a double standard.

OP, The etiquette prohibition is for an all white, bridal looking dress, not a patterned dress. That goes for almost any amount of white.

Michelle, This was the traditional rule as black dresses were considered more appropriate to mourning attire and therefore wearing black was like saying you disapprove the marriage, It’s nothing to do with men’s clothing since dark or black suits on men have always been common. Wearing black is common where I live but is still considered a no-no in traditional circles and some regions of the US.
