Can I alter a slim a-line dress to make it more a-line? Maggie Sottero Coco

Stacy, on April 12, 2010 at 9:04 AM Posted in Planning 0 16

I loooove the Maggie Sottero coco except for how it fits around my hips. Even in my size, I would rather have a more traditional a-line bottom for the dress...like the Maggie Sottero Adelaide. Does anyone know if a "slim" a-line dress can be let out some to make it more a-line??

I doubt it...they can take dresses in, but not let them out, because they don't include extra fabric inside the seam. I fell in love with pictures of a Maggie dress that had a modified A-line, but it looked awful around my hips once it was on me. You want to look your absolute BEST on your wedding day, so I didn't get it; it just wasn't flattering. I DID, however, print pictures of the dress and show them to the consultant at every bridal store I went to, telling them I wanted "this with an A-line," and I found exactly what I wanted. It's out there...don't settle!

You can order extra fabric when you order your dress but why on earth would you change CoCo? *faints* I'm admittedly biased b/c she was in my final 3 lol. I ordered Fiorella.

Well, I'm plus sized and although everyone loves it on me and I personally think that the ruching is very flattering, it makes me look like I have big hips when honestly, all of my weight is in my stomach. Maybe the corset pushes it out, LOL! I'm limited in the samples that I can try...basically just the Adelaide, the Coco and the Mona Lisa Royale. I like the Adelaide by FI doesn't. I hate the Mona Lisa. I like Coco except for the fact that it isn't a-line. Hmm...does anyone know if there is a dress between the Adelaide and the Coco style-wise by Maggie Sottero?

What are your favorite parts about each dress? I wound up with Adelaide so I'm kind of invested lol. But like both dresses have beading on the bust - do you like that? Do you like the limited beading? The draping?

The coco actually is an A-line it just has a dropped waist. Do you have pics of you in the dress? Probably what's happening is the ruching is concealing the weight in your tummy (which is probably where you normally focus b/c you're aware of it) so the attention is drawn away from your tummy to your hips. What about Melissa Brooch? It's very similar to the CoCo but I think the skirt may be just a tad fuller. http://www.maggiesottero.com/dress.aspx?keywordText=melissa royale&line=m&keywordType=any&page=0&pageSize=15&style=A3342BRT

Yes - I have pictures but they are crappy cell phone pics. Also, I am up on a platform in the Coco and the pics were taken from down below - never incredibly flattering. My incredibly honest family and friends tell me they aren't great pics of what they saw in person. First is the Adelaide, and then the Coco. What I like best is the ruching and the beading on the top. My FI prefers the beading on the Coco.

Were you wearing any type of undergarment with the dress? A good bustier is really going to suck you in and give you good shaping.

Another thought, you can always add some crinoline underneath the dress to give it more fullness. How tall are you? You should be able to pull that off without needing any extra length depending on what type of shoes you intend to wear.

I'm wearing a long-line bra from Alfred angelo (corset that hooks in back) but it's probably not the correct size. It ends above my hips which makes them larger. I need to find something that is more of a true corset and goes down further on my torso, I think, but finding undergarments that are 42Bs is no easy task... Smiley smile

I like LadyLee's suggestions, I can't see anyway to alter it (in my mind)

What about Maggie Sottero Olympia from the 2009 collection. This has more A line and you could always add a little more sparkle to the bust area?

A longline bra will make a HUGE difference in how you look and feel around the hips. I certainly did for me! Overall though, I think the shape compliments you very well! Definately try it with an extra petticoat, that also helped mine as well, to give it more of an a-line feel.

Looking at Coco - if the dress is too long for you your seamstress should be able to shorten it at the waist which would pull up the point where the skirt flares. It is difficult to tell by the photo how the dress is constructed. I would have the seamstress look at the dress on you - tell her what you would like it to look like and she should be able to tell if it can be done.
