Cakes, too much or too little?

Jenna, on December 21, 2019 at 2:04 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 16

When you all are planning your cake... Are you planning on getting enough for EVERY guest on your list or are you rounding down a bit? I'm trying to budget the best I can but I am a procrastinator and I'm afraid I won't be able to afford the big cake I wanted originally. Like, does EVERYONE eat cake at a wedding? I'm not sure I've ever eaten cake at any of the weddings I have attended... lol

So my question is... based on your guestlist count... are you telling the cake people your exact number, a little less, or a little more?? I just don't want to have a bunch extra or come up too short for people that want to eat it.

I think you can budget down a little. Doesn't have to be cake for everyone necessarily, especially if you have other desserts on the side.

I think this really depends. We had our cake served to the tables as dessert so it would have been pretty noticeable if a group of people weren’t served dessert. If the slices will just be on a table or you’ll have other desserts too, you may not need that many servings.

We ordered double what we'd need. 24 regular in our 3 original flavors. And 180 mini in 6 flavors that we're also using as our wedding favors

It definitely depends on if you’re just having one flavor of cake, different flavors of cake, or a variety of desserts along with the cake. For us, we did Nothing Bundt Cakes bundtinis and we got 4 different flavors. We calculated 1.5 bundtinis per person (divided the flavors evenly). We ended up with only 4 bundtinis left over, so that calculation definitely worked out for us.

I just contacted my venue as well to see how the dessert stuff all works and what is allowed there. One venue I was considering only allowed cakes and nothing else and I forgot to ask the place that I actually booked at. So I honestly didn't even think of a smaller cake and then adding other types of desserts with it!! Man, I don't know who gave me permission to plan a wedding but this is stressfull! lol!

We had a 100 person guest list and we had a cake that served 40. Then we had a full dessert bar with several other options. When there are other options, not everyone eats cake.

I have been to a wedding where the couple only offered cake for dessert and did not order enough for everyone and ran out with about 5 tables unserved...

We did large gourmet cupcakes from a local bakery. They were large, but the size of a traditional slice of cake I believe. We ordered one per person for 125 people and had approximately 15 or so left over.

We’re rounding down!! We have a tight budget and I know for a fact a lot of people won’t be eating the actual cake and we have a little dessert table anyway set up like a buffet.

We're doing cupcakes and rounding up a little. My plan is to have 20ish more cupcakes than people.

We recently attended a wedding that decided partway thru that they would run out of cake so they started cutting much smaller pieces. Which wouldn't have bothered us... but everyone at our table got a normal sized piece of cake, and my fiance couldn't get any until after the speeches for some reason. And they served him a teeny, tiny piece. He was sad because he just got done with a gluten hiatus.

For us, we're getting a single tier rosette piped cake, and a full slab grocery store cake. Considering my guest list, that should be more than enough, honestly.

I think this depends on the crowd, as well as what other offerings, if any, are available. I don't really like cake, so if there are other sweets available I'll usually end up skipping cake in favor of a different dessert option. Or I usually just have a couple bites of my FH's piece of cake.

If you want a beautiful cake, and you want to be able to serve everyone, and budget is an issue, why not have a large sheet cake for guests and a smaller cutting cake for yourself? This is a popular option and much less expensive than a fully decorated, multi-tiered wedding cake designed to feed hundreds of people. Lots of people do this, and in the event you end up with a lot of extra cake, you won't feel so bad if you are only paying $1-2 per extra serving vs $5-7 per uneaten piece.

We're expecting around 125 people for our wedding. We got a cake that will feed 90. We did this because we know that not everyone will eat cake and we are also having a dessert bar at our wedding, so guests will likely eat from that if they don't want cake.

I would at least have one serving per guest.
