Cakes at each table?

Marie, on October 12, 2012 at 4:04 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 20

I have been toying with the idea of doing a cake at each table in different flavors. My friend did that for her renewal and it was a hit. Gets some people interacting with one another etc. As a bonus.. it would save a TON of money (as my girls and I can probably do them all as we will only probably have 10/12 tables) and be part of a centerpiece to. Any opinions??

I think it is cute. I read somewhere that the bride and groom went to each table and cut the cake. Good way to interact with everyone.

I actually really liked that idea too and at first we planned to do "cake" or "cupcake" centerpieces. The thing that hung us up was buying and transporting cake stands for each table, b/c our wedding was in a city where we don't live. Any bakery or service that would supply the cakestands got really expensive to the point it wasn't worth it. Some bakeries actually charge more for small, individual cakes b/c of the labor involved in making and decorating them, so you really do have to shop around.

A lot of our DIY-type stuff got really nixed b/c of the transportation factor, but if our wedding would have been local we totally would have made it happen. I really loved the idea. Oh well. Smiley smile

I was actually thinking of my girls and I doing them and probably different Bundt cake recipes that my family has been making for years... Thought about going to a thrift store or consignment shop for the plates.

Guess I have some time still.

    Thanks

That's a great idea! I also love the idea of the bride & groom cutting the cake at each table - makes for a lot of "cake cutting" pictures so more chances to get "the right one" lol [: also great way to interact with each table and personally thank each table of guests for coming.

My cousin did it at her wedding and people thought it was awesome! No trekking all the way across the venue looking like a piggie if you want a second slice! Smiley smile

That's a great idea! It's more personal if you're making it yourself & sharing your family recipes too. For cake stands, you could get nice plates & look for a matching base to glue below the plate to make your own cake stands. I love that idea of the bride/groom going to each table to cut the cake & mingle with the guests at that table. Plus using those as centerpieces will definitely save $!

Great idea! Here's a link for DIY cake stands that I thought would be easy to make and look fabulous! Plus you can do them in your wedding colors which makes them nice as a centerpiece as well.

I love the idea. You can check TJ Maxx for cake stands, but they average about $25 a piece.

I think it's a cool idea. My friend did a cheesecake on each table, and it went over well.

If you want cake stands for a good price - seriously - go to estate sales. FH and I are junk hunting fools and we love estate, garage and auction sales. ANY estate sale I have gone to always has at least 3-4 cake plates. You can leave them as is or if you would prefer them to match a little better you can always spray paint them the same color.

We've done this with picture frames for our tables and they look amazing!

Marie, You and I think alike! I too considered individual cakes, and I had planned to use cake plates I could pick up at garage sales, St. Vinnies, Goodwill, etc. However, due to cost, we ultimately went with one tiered cake and sheet cakes in the back. We are having a carrot cake (yummers), and I instructed the venue that I want LOTS of cake, and I don't want skimpy pieces.

I think the touch of making the cakes yourselves out of family recipes is wonderful - and it makes it more affordable.

I can't wait to hear how it turns out!

I didn't read at first that you were planning to bake them yourselves!

Just be very realistic about the time that will take. Even if you can bake them ahead of time and freeze (I'd do a trial run to see how your recipes come out), it takes a while to decorate 10-12 cakes, and you'll probably be doing that the day before your wedding so they're fresh. You'll also need a very large work and storage space, transport and setup the day of the wedding.

Not trying to discourage you, just don't get in over your head!

BTW when I was considering this idea I found very plain glass stands at Walmart for $6.99. (they would need jazz, they were kinda fugly lol.) And you can google tutorials make your own from candlesticks and plates.

If it helps, I DIY'd this mockup cupcake centerpiece with a candlestick/plate from Hobby Lobby. For us, it got down to distance and time, I had to scrap the DIY stuff. But it could have worked!
