Cake! Why you so expensive?!

ButSrsly, on October 12, 2015 at 8:17 AM Posted in Planning 0 26

Dropped $1000 on a cake this weekend. I'll be happy 11/28/15 simply because I can stop hemorrhaging money.

Lol holy hell, My venue covers the cake but only a certain style so I still needed to pay 80 some bucks for the cake to look how i wanted it to look.

Nothing compared to yours though, that's crazy !

I'm very curious to see what this $1000 cake looks like! Must be awesome. Our local bakery is going to charge us roughly $350-$400 for a three-tier/100 guest cake with minimal decor (this is in NYC). And I'm cracking up at "hemorrhaging money." That is the best description of wedding planning I've ever heard.

Cake is next on my to do list, and I just can't. I mean, I like cake. Cake is good. But I don't like it enough to spend at least $500-$700 on it so I keep putting it on the back burner. How big is your cake?!

Our cake is included in our venue and the coordinator told me there is a $2,000 budget with the bakery they work with. I couldn't believe a cake could possibly cost that much.

In my area, fully decorated wedding cakes run 4-11.00 per slice.

It's 3 tier for 150 people. Cost is $5.50/person plus tax and delivery. There was no difference in price between buttercream and fondant. For the record, I hate fondant. The starting rate at all cake places around here is $3.50/person which is a very basic cake. They also charge the same whether its a foam cake or real cake because they have to decorate it. Making the cake isn't the cost. I still have to pay the venue the "cake serving fee" which I think is another $2/person. I like to think this is my way of supporting local, small, family owned businesses Smiley smile

I live in a relatively inexpensive area, and I almost had a stroke when the baker said my cake was going to be nearly $1,000. Granted, it had one layer with real silver leaf on it, but that was only about $100 of the cost. I looked at her and said, "for a CAKE???" She did some edits and got it down to $850, which was still well over the $500 I thought was reasonable. Oh well, it tasted good.

I have no idea how much my cake was because it was included with my catering price but OMG I would have paid a shit ton for that cake...it was SO GOOD.

I always thought the cost of cake and decorated cookies was ridiculous until I started baking fancy cakes and decorating cookies and realized how much work goes into them. I made a Chipotle burrito cake for my daughter's 15th birthday - and it was not perfect by any means - and it took me about 10 hours to make. I decorate cookies and between the baking and decorating it takes a couple of days depending on how many and what the design is. Now I understand why people charge $$$$ for wedding cakes.

Mine is that much too Smiley sad We are having a grooms cake as well, the total for both was like 1500. They are both amazing and delicious, though.

We are just starting the cake process. I was quoted about $400 for mine, which will serve about 100 people. I had the same cake quoted at three different bakeries and the highest price was $1000. We are instead going with a local family-owned bakery down the street from us. Their cakes are beautiful but since they a re lesser known, they are also less expensive. But I had the same reaction. "FOR CAKE?!!"

But 2YearsAway is right - there is significant time and effort put into these creations so you have to break it down to an hourly cost. It's mind boggling but it is someone's time and effort.

Ugh, ours too...a tad more actually, to feed 200. But, I LOVE CAKE, so I was cool with it, lol! We're going this saturday for our design appointment to figure out exactly how we want it to look. This is shaping up to be one of the hardest decisions we've made! I really want it to look nice and I just can't decide on a design. I have a feeling when we get there I'm going to want stuff that is going to end up costing us more too. Story of my life.

HOLY CRAP! Because I am making my cake/cupcakes with my mom and FH's mom (we only have 16 guests, 14 adults/2 children), I hadn't ever looked at cake prices. That seems so crazy to me. Hopefully that is some damn good cake!

I read in one of the bridal magazines once that the average cost per slice for a Cake Boss cake was over $19. And it doesn't even taste good Smiley sad

Our cake was expensive, but totally worth it. And we got a free cake on our anniversary Smiley smile

Ouch!! That's a lot. It varies so much by location but ours was $296 for enough cake to feed 75 I think. We way overestimated on amount of cake because a bunch of DHs coworkers were planning to stop by later in the night. It was a stunning design (ombre ruffles with huge amazing ruffle flowers) and the best tasting cake I've ever had.

The part that gets me is the serving cost. We just had my mom cut and serve and another guest helped. It was a small wedding so it didn't take long. I would say 90% of weddings I've been to it's just been a family member cutting slices. There always seems to be an older aunt or something that's so thrilled to have a job to do!

We paid material only for our cake, a good friend made it. He's a baker, and it was definitely bigger than we needed, but for the material and floral only on our cake, it was $350. I cannot imagine how much it cost had he charged us for labor/delivery/tax, etc.

When we went to our cake tasting, we showed the baker a picture of our dream cake, which would have fondant. She said it would be $1,000+. My FH and I looked at each other, then asked for cheaper options. I think what we will do is a 3-tiered cake (no fondant) with a couple of sheet cakes, that should be around $400.

We went with a small local no frills..but delicious! baker. We taste tested at Publix also, which I would totally recommend. They were both about the same price so we decided we'd rather support the family owned business. We're getting a 3 tier cake with layers 12", 10", 8" and buttercream frosting with a simple design. It's $375.00 and serves 75 ppl. (We're serving the top layer, not keeping it). For the grooms cake, the menu we chose at our reception venue includes cheesecake which happens to be my FH'S fave so I asked if we could do that as the grooms 'cake'. They were incredibly gracious about it and had the idea of setting up a sort of cheesecake bar for him! I'm so excited that were saving that $ and it'll be perfect for him! I've found out while planning that it never hurts to ask!! Smiley smile
