Cake. What to choose and why?

I'm thinking about having a small main cake (2 tier) and the rest will be cupcakes. I'm doing a "painting the roses red" theme for my cake. I don't want it to look childish. I want a classic/ vintage look. I want red roses on the formal main cake, then roses topping the cupcakes in white and red to look like they are being painted. I need edible playing cards popping up here and there. Again, think classic/ vintage.

So what should I use? I need a vegan chocolate cake (fiance is vegan). Any opinions on decorating? Do you prefer fondant, icing, cream? Why do you like or dislike them? Would you use fondant or chocolate for the cards? Why would you recommend one over the other?

Fondant looks beautiful but tastes awful! The #1 rule for my cake is no fondant! Buttercream icing is so delicious and a good baker can get it almost just as smooth as fondant. For the cards, fondant could be ok, but for the actual cake decoration, I'd go with icing.

I agree with PPs! Fondant does look pretty but I definitely do not like the taste. You could probably make the cards with either fondant or chocolate, but I think chocolate will taste better.

Do you plan on baking the cake and cupcakes yourself? Or will you work with a bakery?
