Cake vs. cupcakes

Almost Mrs. P, on April 21, 2013 at 6:58 PM Posted in Planning 0 39

What is your opinion on having a wedding cake vs cupcakes? Also, are ya'll doing a groom's cake in addition to the wedding cake/cupcakes?

I know cupcakes have a ton of advantages. you can mix/match the flavors, send extras as take home gifts, transport easier. they are cheaper, not as messy...

But i can't bring myself to pass up the chance to have a large beautifully decorated cake.

I love a nice cupcake but I always think that a cake cake is more wedding-y.Also that maybe cupcakes are very fashionable and so 'date' (in the way certain dresses do for example)

I don't get the grooms cake thing - really I just dont get it.

Just one wedding cake does it for me

Wedding cake technically is more wedding-y and uptight older types might frown at cupcakes, but honestly if you can make ones that are really fancy and delicious people would not care at all. Plus you could stage them to look like something cool!

I do cupcakes (alcohol infused) as a side business and I'm still going with a nice big cake. I would do my alcohol mini's as part of the dessert table though. Smiley smile

I want cupcakes, probably going with a variety of gourmet style cupcakes including snickers, Oreo, white chocolate truffle, and peanut butter! I might also add a small cake for me and FH to cut. The bakery also has truffle cake balls and brownie shooters I might also get for more variety.

I agree with the other ladies. I prefer a cake for a wedding. We are not doing a grooms cake.

We're doing both, actually. We are having cupcakes for the guests, mini ones 2 each person. Also, having a small square cake at the top for us to cut into and save for the first anniversary. The total, with 2 different flavors, top tier, rental of the cupcake stand, delivery and set up is $313. Right on budget!

I prefer a wedding cake. I don't think we will be doing a groom's cake.

I'm doing cupcakes for guests - a few jumbo, mostly a mix of regular & mini cupcakes. I'm doing a small 6x2 cake for FH & I to cut into. For our budget, small guest count, & semi formal wedding, cupcakes is more appropriate.

No grooms cake here, I see no point in it.

If you're on a budget, then cupcakes! Smiley smile Plus more flavors for finicky guests (my FH doesn't like chocolate at all). I wouldn't do a groom's cake, especially if you are already providing a heavy dinner for guests already.

I'll probably do a small wedding cake and have cupcakes too. I love cupcakes. If I had to choose just one, I'd pick cupcakes.

    No groom's cake.

I think a cake is a thing people look at weddings also, just like the bride's dress, flowers, etc. we are doing a cake, we are doing the grooms cake at the rehearsal dinner

We are doing both a wedding cake and cupcakes: a smaller, two tier cake ombré cake for cutting, and then cupcakes for the guests. Our venue charges an insane cake cutting fee and we wanted to offer variety, so it was an easy choice. I feel like we're getting the best of both worlds.

The grooms cake is a tradition predominantly in the south. Back when wedding cakes were traditionally all one flavor (typically white cake), the grooms cake was done in the grooms favorite flavor to offer variety. The grooms cake has morphed now into a special cake that's supposed to represent the groom. We are having a small grooms cake at our rehearsal and I'm SO excited about it! It'll be in the shape of a rockfish :-) FH doesn't know, it's a surprise!

I actually want all three!!! My catering package comes with a three tiered cake all in white, but I kind of want a second cake to represent my colors (Blue and Orange). So I was thinking, if i could get that white cake with my colors and the difference I have to pay is not much, then I'll do that.

But if the cost is as much as buying another cake, I'll just do that. But instead of buying a new cake, I'll just buy a bunch of cupcakes!!!

I definitely want a surprise groom's cake for FH. It's going to be a pizza burger. If I have a rehearsal dinner, then I'll have it there. But if not, then at the reception. But now that I'm thinking about it, it's going to be a whole lot of cake!!!

@Debbie, thanks for this post, now you've got me thinking!!! LoL

I didn't care either way, but FH hated the cupcake idea.

I completely understand this, especially since we all plan to only have one wedding day, might as well do what you want, right? I think we are doing both only instead of one huge cake we will do what we did for our wedding and have multiple single layered round cakes for variety, then add cupcakes.

Can you do both? We are placing cupcake bouquets intermixed with real floral arrangements around the reception area for folks to eat as they choose and a somewhat smaller than normal cake for the cake cutting ceremony.
