Cake tasting...with cupcakes?

Hi All!

I've scheduled a cake tasting for March 2nd with a bakery that I really like. However, I was a little turned off when I was told that the tasting will be done with cupcakes. They don't request any flavors/fillings in advance. They'll just put the cupcake together during the tasting.

The bakery that is contracted through our venue makes 3 mini cakes with cake/filling/frosting of our choice and allows us to take the cakes home to try. I had a cake from this bakery before and didn't like it at all. However, the cake that was served during our couples tasting was delicious! My fiance plan to try them out next month.

For those of you who already had your tasting, were you able to try a cake? Or did your bakery also use cupcakes? How was your cake tasting experience?

I was just wondering if having cupcakes during a cake tasting is the norm or not.

I’m not sure I understand the aversion to a cupcake if it’s the same batter as the wedding cake.
I understand wanting to tell them ahead of time what you want to try, can they guarantee they’ll be serving enough cupcakes that you’ll try what you want?

I made an assumption and ended up making an a** of myself by thinking they will provide actual slices of cake instead of cupcakes lol.
Just a beginner not knowing what to expect at all.

I don’t think you made an ... out of yourself! I’m just surprised so many others were saying they would be annoyed by it too. I would be if it was different batter, so maybe just confirm it isn’t. Which really isn’t a dumb question IMO. I ask things like that all the time and I’m shocked when a vendor says oh ya, the batter is different.

Ours was a cupcake of each flavor/icing combo they had. What surprised me is that she also let us try tarts and brownies for the dessert table. She offered us gourmet cookies, cheesecake and cake pops but we already had so much left over to take home....
It was a wonderful experience and I hope the cake and desserts turn out as good as that day! Have fun and enjoy!

We tasted cupcakes but we were able to tell them in advance what flavor and fillings we wanted to taste. They just made a whole batch and sold the ones that we didn't eat. I think that's more cost effective for them.

For our cake tasting we had just a bite size piece of each cake to try. Bakeries don’t typically provide full sized cakes for tastings.

I just figured it wouldn't be the same with cupcakes vs slices of cake. I'm looking forward to the tastings either way. I love sweets!

It's been a chore trying to decide on some of these vendors. Why would you be laughed at for wanting to save your top tier? Isn't that a tradition? Wow, I'm sorry to hear that.
I'm glad you were able to find your baker in the end! Which flavors did you go with?

9 flavors! That sounds awesome! Glad to hear that your cake was delicious!
There isn't a problem, per se, with using cupcakes. I just went into the phone call with the bakery assuming that they'll serve slices or a mini cake. I was just let down with my high expectations lol.

That sounds great Erika and thank you! Did you decide on your cake and options for the dessert table?
I really shouldn't even question the fact that the tasting will be with cupcakes vs cakes because I've had both from this particular bakery and everything is always so delicious!

I had a home bakery, and all of my tastings were cupcakes. It doesn’t make a lot of sense (especially for mom and pop shops) to make whole mini cakes when cupcakes are easier, faster, and less expensive. What’s great about cupcakes is you can literally make any flavor of cake with any filling and any frosting right there in second. And also, when you have mini cakes that are larger than cupcakes, it’s easy to get overwhelmed at th amount of cake in front of you, especially when most people don’t eat more than 1-2 bites of the cake, it can become almost exhausting.
