Cake tasting...with cupcakes?

Angerra, on January 15, 2019 at 2:18 PM Posted in Planning 0 49
Hi All!

I've scheduled a cake tasting for March 2nd with a bakery that I really like. However, I was a little turned off when I was told that the tasting will be done with cupcakes. They don't request any flavors/fillings in advance. They'll just put the cupcake together during the tasting.

The bakery that is contracted through our venue makes 3 mini cakes with cake/filling/frosting of our choice and allows us to take the cakes home to try. I had a cake from this bakery before and didn't like it at all. However, the cake that was served during our couples tasting was delicious! My fiance plan to try them out next month.

For those of you who already had your tasting, were you able to try a cake? Or did your bakery also use cupcakes? How was your cake tasting experience?

I was just wondering if having cupcakes during a cake tasting is the norm or not.

Thanks!

It would make sense to do the cupcakes for the bakery. It is more expensive to make the whole cake and if you want to try several flavors there won't be cake going to waste.

I've had 2 weddings now and my cake tastings have always consisted of slices of cakes with an array of flavors/fillings. I've never had an actual cake so I don't see why having a cupcake would matter. What is important (I learned this from my 1st wedding) is how representative the cake tasting is to the actual wedding cake. Often times the cake tasting samples are more fresh since they are usually made that day so they are more moist. Some bakeries make their wedding cakes several days in advance so by the time of the wedding they are a lot drier than what you tasted at the cake tasting. For that reason, I would ask them how far in advance of the wedding they make their cakes.

I had my cake tasting around Christmas and we used cupcakes as well. It doesn’t seem practical for them to make a new cake just for the tasting. It’s the same taste just smaller portion. We got to try different cupcake flavors as well as toppings and fillings.

This is a great question to ask and advice I’ll be taking. I would also not worry too much about the form of (cup)cake you’re trying if it’s going to be the same cake and filling you would be having in full size form at the wedding.

Thank you so much for your input! I would not have thought to ask how far in advance will they make the came. I appreciate your advice!
With this being my first cake tasting, I assumed I'd be trying actual slices of cake lol. So I went into the phone call with expectations.

You're welcome. I learned that lesson the hard way because my cake tasting was awesome but my wedding cake was so dry! It was very disappointing. Fortunately, I didn't have any issues with my cake this time around! The reason they didn't ask you for favors/fillings in advance is because they will (should) have every single flavor/filling option available for you to try - but in small samples. That part was actually fun and I learned about combinations I never would have thought of.

We did two tastings! 1 was with cupcakes, and the other was with tiny cake samples with different frosting/filling options to dip the cake samples into.

You and I have the same wedding date!
I just really thought we'd be trying a regular slice of cake and not a cupcake. But I'm game for however this goes. I'm not sure why I'm a little more excited to have 3 mini cakes vs cupcakes lol.

    Definitely makes sense.
I guess I was just a little annoyed that the bakery I like uses cupcakes for the tasting and the other bakery I'm still on the fence about makes mini cakes.

Hey Angerra!! I did a cake tasting for a party I was having and the bakery used cupcakes instead of slices for the tasting. At that particular bakery, we also got the chance to take some home so we could taste again later. It seems to be pretty normal for bakeries to do it like this or with slices of cake!

    We did 4 cake tastings and they went as follows;

    1. She served cupcakes but we were toying with the idea of serving cupcakes so this was acceptable. The cupcakes were made fresh but did not taste very good. they weren't bad they just honestly did not meet my high standards. she then was rude later without any type of provocation. next!

    2. This was a home baker. we were set on serving actual cake at this time so I was not happy that she also served cupcakes. the cupcakes were clearly premade and frozen. They were waxy there. we took the left overs home and tried them later with my sister. all of us agreed they were nasty. Next!

    3. Once again cupcakes with no choice of what flavors. They were basic and at the meeting the baker was a snob. He literally laughed in my face when I stated we planned to save the top tier. FH said he looked at my face when the guy laughed and knew it was over. Next!

    4. We were almost loosing hope but the next baker was another in home baker and she actually served us 3 small cakes (flavors of our choosing!) The icing the cake the pictures of her decorating!!! I couldn't get enough! And most importantly her (the decorator) and her mom (the baker) were the sweetest people ever!!

I think cupcakes sound wonderful. They are easier to make, smaller portions for you to try different things, and they taste similar/the same as a slice of actual cake.

Our tasting was actually slices of each kind of cake and then dollops of each filling so we could mix and match. We took the leftovers home.

A cake is a cake is a cake no matter what form its in, in my opinion, as long as it isn't dry or anything. The whole point is to taste and choose flavors.

Our bakery used cupcakes for the tasting, as the cake flavors & frosting options were the same (we also were ordering cupcakes anyway in addition to our two-tiered cake).

We thought this was a great idea, as it allowed us to try many flavors (I think we tried 9 total). The day of our wedding, our two-tiered cake was DELICIOUS and tasted just like the cake/frosting flavors we had chosen from the cupcakes we test tasted. The cupcakes for guests were also ridiculously good!

I really don't see the issue with having your tasting utilize cupcakes...

We had the option of testing one small cake with filling of our choice, or testing 8 cake flavors and all the fillings in a 'make your cupcake' scenario where the cake was cupcakes and all the fillings were on the side.

I loved the cupcake way of doing it because since I had celiac I could still taste all the fillings while FH picked which cake flavor he liked best.

Mine is cupcakes also. Why would they make multiple whole cakes for us to try? Totally normal.

Our free tasting involved 6 full-size cupcakes. They were the most popular flavors the bakery had, and were filled as well. It was plenty to give us an idea of the quality and flavors! Wedding cake was perfect and as expected.
