Cake Servings

Madison, on March 29, 2021 at 10:44 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 8
Our guest list is at about 85 people and we just sent out our invitations so not many people have rsvp’d yet. We honestly have no idea how many people will end up coming or not since it’s an out of town wedding. We originally guessed about 60 people or so would come so when we ordered our cake in October we bought a 3 tier cake with 64 servings. I’m starting to get nervous that it might not be enough and I can’t wait much longer to make changes with the bakery. Should I just add an extra tier to make sure there’s plenty of cake or leave it?

Can you talk to the bakery to see what they’d recommend? Cake shouldn’t be made weeks in advance so maybe you can change the servings after your get your RSVPs back?

Ask your baker how much time they need to make changes. They should make it no sooner or later than the day before the wedding. Your rsvp due date is usually 3 weeks before the wedding which is plenty of time to adjust. 3 tiers are said to serve well over 100 guests (counting the top tier which no one saves for a year) but that is if you go with the traditional wedding slivers of 1×2". Some guests will have seconds and others won't touch it. You should be fine keeping the cake as is. But double check with the baker for peace of mind.

64 sounds perfect, but I’m sure the baker could always adjust! You could even add a tier, serve from the bottom up, and freeze the first for a one year celebration.

We got a 25 person cake for a 18 person party... with the exception of some of the big dudes, most people only wanted ‘a little’. We had almost half left! But- we cut by hand. Venues that will cut and serve for you will likely be spot on with serving sizes.

Your baker isn't asking for a final head count? Ours asked for final numbers about 3 weeks out. As others said, they shouldn't be making it months in advance.

Your baker will likely check in with you closer to the day for the final headcount.

As others have said, you should be able to tell your baker your final headcount. They won't make your cake until (likely) the day before your wedding anyway. I would think one to two weeks would be plenty of notice if you needed to change your guest count.

Maybe ask if you can add a 1/4 or 1/2 sheet cake to your order once you get more RSVPs in? That way you won't have to mess with your already agreed upon cake and design, and nobody will know the difference once it's all cut up!

This is my suggestion too. From my memory of working at a bakery, a 1/4 sheet cake serves approximately 25-30 people. Ask your baker if you can add a cake on the side if you need to change the amount of cake after they get final numbers from you. If you or your caterer are cutting in the kitchen no one will even know the difference. Even if your guests see that you have 2 cakes, the pictures will still have your 3 tiered beauty in them.
