Cake serving, who’s doing this for the day of your wedding??

Samantha, on October 8, 2019 at 3:13 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 29
Unfortunately, our vendor for the cake will only delivery and setup the cake for display. We’re thinking about asking a family member, however we want everyone to enjoy the night.

How do yall plan to do this for your guest?
Any ideas or recommendations?

Our catering vendor has waiters included they will be serving the food and the cake. Luckily they are not charging a cutting fee.

I was also at a wedding where we (bridesmaids) passed out the cake. We were happy to help out the bride.

Would your caterer or coordinator do it for a fee? Not only is it time consuming for a family member, you also have to really know how to portion the slices out for wedding cake.

We did a small cutting cake for pictures, then cupcakes. No one served the guests, people just walked up to the dessert table and took cupcakes, cookies, brownies, etc.

Do you have waitstaff for the rest of the reception? If you do I imagine they would do it.

We went with cupcakes so guests can simply take what they want.

I wouldn't ask a guest or Bridesmaid to do this. I'd hire somebody or ask the venue if they will handle.

Our caterer cut the cake and our DOC served it to older guests while younger guests walked to the table to get a piece. I think catering typically covers this.

We have a 2 tier cake for pictures/cutting, a sheet cake for serving, and cupcakes. I think I'll just get my mom to cut up the sheet cake. It won't be hard to do that so she won't mind.

I’m going to have a couple family members (cousins and aunt) help with things like that.

Not sure where your reception is... ours was at a restaurant and they served it. If you have a catering company they probably will if you ask them. Or you could do cupcakes if you don’t want to deal with it, maybe just get a small 6 inch cake for you to cut for photos. Hope this helps!

Our caterers would have if we had gotten a cake, but we skipped it Smiley smile

id worry about having a family member do it as wedding cakes typically need to be cut in a very specific way. If there wasn’t someone to provide this service, I’d probably opt for cupcakes instead, and just have a small cutting cake on top for your cake cutting, if you’re doing that.

We had family friends help out. My mom had some ladies who had helped with my sisters wedding and volunteered to help with mine too.

Our venue will give us the cake cutting experience then will cut for everyone one else and give them out. If that doesn’t seem plausible for you. You can always see if they’ll at least cut it and then put on a larger table and people can pick up their cake. Or, have a portion of the cake you can cut and already have the cake cut and people can still get it on their own. Last thought is a cupcake cake with a portion you can still cut for the experience.

I'll just add that for an amateur, cutting a wedding cake is VERY time consuming and potentially messy. For daughter's shower, I ordered a single 12 or 14" cake that was the equivalent of one of the three layers of her wedding cake (at least 6-7" tall...). The baker talked me through how to cut it for the 25 shower guests (e.g., cut a 6-7" circle in the middle, then cut slices from the outer ring, and finally, cut the remaining 6" circle into slices). Especially because the cake was so tall, it took me forever, and I had to put on a plastic gloves because my hands were getting covered in frosting. I started cutting when daughter started opening gifts, and I missed almost all the gift opening.... I was only cutting 25 slices; I would have given up before I got to 100 or more. Unless someone REALLY knows what they are doing, don't ask a guest/amateur to do this task. There's a reason some catering companies/venues charge by the slice to do it. If you don't have a professional to do it, I'd consider cupcakes. (Whoever is cutting also needs to know what they are doing or you might not end up with the right number of slices for your guests.)

My catering vendor has people willing to do this but my DOC has already said she will do it included in her cost and is bringing the cutting set.
