Cake Server Set

VICTORIA, on October 11, 2020 at 10:30 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 28
I feel like this may be a dumb question, BUT here we go anyway.

Cake serving sets- necessary or no? Worth the extra expense?
FH doesn't think it's worth it and thinks it's a waste of money. He doesn't think we'll ever use it again.
My sister says we should absolutely get one (she got one) and my mom said we could always just use a regular knife.
I just want to see everyone's thoughts. I don't want to spend the extra money if I don't need to (we're finding 100% of wedding ourselves). But also don't want to potentially miss a key piece...ugh😔

Completely optional. Every wedding Ive been to just used a regular kitchen knife and it worked out fine. Unless someone decides to gift you a set to use, save your money. Another option is to borrow someone else's set.

I agree with Michele, I wouldn't spend the money if you don't think you'll use it again. I love the idea of borrowing one - that way, you can borrow a fancier set if you want to use it for pictures, and it can count as your "Something Borrowed"!

Agree with PPs. Optional and borrowing one is a great idea. Will your sister let you borrow hers?

I couldn't find a single practical reason why we needed one, so we will just happily use our venues' and save that money for something else. Totally understand that it may be a meaningful purchase and memorable to some couples though. We just aren't sentimental about "things" and frankly I don't need more clutter in my house post-wedding. Smiley xd I would say if it sounds like a nice idea to you, and something you would use after the wedding with fond memories, then do it! If you'd just do it because "that's what everyone does" then I'd probably pass.

I agree with others in seeing if you can borrow one. Also, you don't have to get a super expensive one. I just did a quick Google search and found some for $15 and under at Target, Hobby Lobby, Macy's, and Bed, Bath, and Beyond. They can also be useful if you like to entertain in your home and have a cake or pie for dessert or something. It doesn't have to be a fancy, elaborate, "wedding" cake server.

Honestly, I hadn’t even considered buying it. We’re on the same boat as far as paying for everything. Our venue has a room that has so many items (flower girl basket, ring bearer pillow, signage etc) that we’re gonna use to help save money. We’ll use what they offer. I agree with Hannah, that you can use it afterwards to entertain at home.

You can find very inexpensive ones on Etsy that include engraving... you can also find some In craft stores, department stores or stores like Marshall’s/TJ Maxxx. I purchased one because I wanted to pass it down.

It's definitely not necessary, but if you do get one, you'll use it at some point. If you have a registry, register for one. If someone buys it for you, you have it and it didn't cost you anything. If they don't, just use whatever the venue provides. There's no reason to put a ton of thought into something you don't care about.

Definitely not necessary. We used whatever our coordinator had for us to use.

Definitely not necessary. Our venue has one that we used. I knew I would never use it again.

We picked up a set for like $10 in Walmart's wedding section LOL. It was pretty for pictures and did the job. Totally saving it to re-use for wedding #2 next year!

As others have said, totally optional and might be a good item to borrow from someone else. We bought a cake serving set and champagne flutes from Things Remembered for our wedding because we wanted something nice day of, a nice photo of those accessories with the cake, and a momento from the wedding. We actually got out our champagne flutes and cake serving set on our anniversary this year and enjoyed a special cake from a local bakery and some champagne. It was really sweet. Do what makes you happy. 😊

As long as your venue or caterer has one I wouldn’t worry about buying one.
My grandmother gifted us the server but not the knife 🤷‍♀️ And it wasn’t in a box with brand/design name
So I had to hunt down what brand it was and then try and find the matching knife. They both now sit in a box. I would have bought a cheap set from hobby lobby had she not because no one had one I could use.

I think the only reason to buy a serving set would be if you don’t already have a cake/pie knife at home and you want one for special occasions. If not, I would borrow one or simply use whatever is available. Thank

I don't think it's necessary at all. My husband and I were just going to get a cheap set from Walmart or Target to use at our wedding but then one of my Aunt's told me not to buy one b/c she got an engraved one for my husband and I as one of our wedding gifts. It is a beautiful set, she spent a ton of money on it and we're grateful to her for getting it for us but we used it the day of the wedding, washed them and put the set back in the box. We haven't looked at them sinceSmiley amazing

I don't think it's a necessity but you can always find a cheap one. I ordered ours from oriental trading and it wasn't expensive at all
