Cake Rental???

Aura Blanca, on November 29, 2011 at 8:38 PM Posted in Planning 0 18

Hi all Brides to be? One of the usual highlights of weddings apart from the Bridal Dress is the wedding cake. I am only having 75 guests but I am still dreaming of a 5 tiered beautiful cake. I inquired the price of the cake from most wedding cake suppliers in San Francisco and it will set me back around **** for the wedding cake which I think is ridiculous money to spend at this time. However, I found a service called cake rental and the cake is rented out to couples for 200 dollars plus 60 dollars shipping. Has anybody here heard of / hired from them. How was the service as I am really thinking of getting their service instead of having a real cake done. thanks a lot!

So if its a rented cake you do not get to cut it?

Guess Im confused how this would work.

I'm with Jessica... not sure exactly what you're getting. Is it a cake that feeds 75 but has some fake layers to make it have the more "wow" effect?

I have heard of faux cakes but never saw one (well I don't think). If you can't get one financially I would say go for it!

    Good luck

Is this a dummy cake just for show where you will have sliced sheet cakes to serve?

If this is the kind that is fake and you have a sheet cake in back to serve I think that's a great idea! They sometimes have a spot where you can put a real slice of cake so you can "cut" it and feed each other if you want to. I decided to just do cupcakes instead of the big cake. It ended up being significantly cheaper for us!

Most bakers around here will add fake layers to a cake and frost them to look real. The cake displays at bakeries are done this way. It's something to ask about.

Okay- now I understand the fake cake and the layers-- but is that also a rental cake? I guess I am thinking if its a rental you couldnt cut it or damage it. Im still confused...

Why rent it in the first place? I mean you can EASILY ask your cake maker how much it would cost for them to cover some foam with fondant to make up the extra tiers of the cake, not to mention if you use elevators, or separators, you can quite literally make the cake as high as you want to.

I asked the cake maker I really like and this is what she replied to me on the email.

Thanks for getting back to me with this information. How many people are you inviting to your wedding and planning to serve cake to? I unfortunately don't offer cost savings when I use faux tiers because the work is all that detail and piping on the outside. In the end it doesn't matter if it is real or faux inside. The bigger the cake the more it will cost regardless of if there are real or faux tiers. Having said that most large cakes like the photo you sent fall in the $1000-$2000 range so $400 is a little hard to work with. I am always happy to try to work with budget, but this may be a stretch. I would be able to make a small 3 tier cake but it would serve about 40-50. I offer sheet cakes to serve 50 and 100 but you would have to have a guest count of at least 125. Let me know your thoughts.

I quoted 400 because if I will rent the fake cake. I will only spend around 200.

Keep looking around and maybe look for something that doesn't need fondant. Can you show us the picture of the cake you want?

One of the local bakeries had this set up on Sunday at our venues tasting. I didn't inquire about cost for renting but thought it was an interesting idea. We won't be renting ourselves but I can see how it could be a cost saver.

As for the email she sent back regarding faux layers, the bakeries I interviewed all said the same thing it would cost the same as it's all about the labor not the materials.

That's a cute cake! But I think a lot of us are still confused about the whole renting a cake thing. What would you feed your guests? Can you share the site with us as well?

This is what I was able to find out after a little research:

Wedding cakes are the center of any wedding party. The newlywed couples dream about their cake, however the cost of wedding cakes can skyrocket, also the possibility of falling over during transportation, heat and humidity for the outdoor weddings can be a major concern.

...you can rent the beautifully designed centerpiece wedding cake. The main cake is covered with real fondant with the looks and feel of a real cake in every aspect, however the inside is made of foam and there is small compartment to place a small portion of edible cake for the ceremony (design of the cake and the special shipping container are Patent Pending). With this patent we are the only company with the rights to a faux(fake) cake with and edible section. After the couple's "feeding each other" act, the display fake cake is taken back into the kitchen and the guests are served regular sheet cakes from the local bakery.

I would keep checking with other cake places. My first quote for the three tier cake I wanted to feed 120 was $1200. I went to some other places and found another place to make the identical cake for $400. The cake tasted great but they had a few less choices in flavors and were not as well known. Now i'm getting the cake look I wanted with dulce de leche instead of a marble with peanut butter filling. I was okay with that b/c the cake tasted great and it was $800 less. I checked out their reviews and work with venues and it was good.
