I'm reading that a tiered, formal cake is pretty expensive. Is it tacky to have a small formal cake that we cut, and just to get a sheet cake that gets cut up and served to the guests (they'll never really know, because it gets cut up in the back)? Or am I better off doing a small formal...

I'm reading that a tiered, formal cake is pretty expensive. Is it tacky to have a small formal cake that we cut, and just to get a sheet cake that gets cut up and served to the guests (they'll never really know, because it gets cut up in the back)? Or am I better off doing a small formal cake/cupcake combo?

    I am planning on doing this!! also adding cheesecake as my FH doesnt like cake!

    One of the funnest weddings I attended did something like that. They had a fake cake (with a real slice for the cutting) and then sheet cakes in full view from a local grocery so guests could choose what they wanted, mix and match flavors, come back for seconds. While everyone thought the cutting part was odd, the sheet cakes on display was a huge hit with no leftovers.
