Cake question

Jen, on December 18, 2019 at 4:02 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 2 42

I'm reading that a tiered, formal cake is pretty expensive. Is it tacky to have a small formal cake that we cut, and just to get a sheet cake that gets cut up and served to the guests (they'll never really know, because it gets cut up in the back)? Or am I better off doing a small formal cake/cupcake combo?

You would be surprised at how many brides do that. Most just get a simple "pretty" cake to cut for pictures and then the sheet cake is cut and plated in the back and brought out to the guests.

I've been to a wedding where they did that. Made no difference to me or other guests, just as long as the cake was good!

It's really common for people to cut a sheet cake for guests. Saves money

Not tacky at all. Smart and budget friendly.

    That's actually SUPER common.

I've never heard anyone say anything negative about it, but I'm sure there's some entitled person somewhere who would think this is unacceptable in some way. I think most people just think it's a smart thing to do.

Cake is cake and plenty of people do it! I think sams/costco even have a special like that with a small cake and sheet cakes for extra.

I feel like if we hadn't found a decent bakery, we would have gone that route. I almost did, but the simple cake wasn't that expensive lol. Totally doable - it's a smart move to save money and keep costs down.

As long as the simple/"eating" cake is properly stored and served, totally a good option to keep costs down without sacrificing a bit of creative flair in your show-cake!

Tacky? Not at all. Seems like the norm. And you dont have to worry about this massive expensive thing falling over.

A lot of people do this, it's tacky at all! Just make sure the "show" cake isn't teeny tiny, cuz then what would be the point.

That is exactly what we are doing small formal little two tier that feeds 30 just to cut and sheet cakes for everyone else. Way cheaper than one big fancy cake

That's what we're thinking of doing, and instead of a sheet cake, mini cheesecakes! Comes out to about $200 for the cheesecakes for less than 100 guests. Not sure on cake pricing yet, havent gotten that far.

I don’t see anything wrong with that! As long as the small cake you cut is pretty and cute, and the sheet cake is delicious, I don’t think anyone will care. You could also do cupcakes! That’s what we’re doing, it’s so much cheaper.

It's not tacky at all! We are getting a cute 2-tier, 2 flavor combo cake and a sheet cake as well. No one will know, and it's so much cheaper!

Nothing wrong with it! I highly reccomend costco cake. If we didnt find a really great deal, we would be having costco cake at our wedding!

This is what I was thinking of doing as well. It’s just cake! Some people make it seem like you have to spends thousands on that expense too. I’m still in the process of trying to see which one is the cheapest between sheet cake or a dessert table.

This is exactly what I'm going to do! My aunt is making our "show cake" for pictures and we're going to have a sheet cake in the back that will be cut and served during our photos (same kind of cake though!)
