Cake question

I'm reading that a tiered, formal cake is pretty expensive. Is it tacky to have a small formal cake that we cut, and just to get a sheet cake that gets cut up and served to the guests (they'll never really know, because it gets cut up in the back)? Or am I better off doing a small formal...

Or am I better off doing a small formal cake/cupcake combo?

If it's tacky, then I'm tacky because that's what I plan on doing Smiley smile

It is your preference as to how you want to do your cake. Its not tacky at all. Go for what you want for your day.

Yeah, they would never know the difference. My hubby and I are not spending a lot of money on our cake . As long as it’s budget friendly and cost effective , do what makes you happy.

Only problem i have with that is I am getting photographed cutting the cake. i don't want to get photographed cutting a sheet cake unless i have a dummy cake for tiers (middle and top) and the real one on the bottom. So for me that would not work. However with my guest count (20) it would work.

At my first wedding I did that and no one blinked an eye. I think most people attending your wedding would be happy you didn't spend extra money on a just a cake. I would hate for a young couple to get in debt or spend more than they wish just to have an IG photo or to impress me.

I’m considering a cupcake cake but the top layer is an actually small cake for us to cut. Pricing was a lot cheaper also too everyone can just grab a cupcake after.

That's exactly what we did- saved us $200 by doing it that way compared to a larger tiered cake.

I cant really say tacky or not. I do know my cake will be in the photos so personally my cake HAS to be right. it seems like more money to buy a "show" cake for photos and then another "sheet cake" to hide and cut for guests in the back. Thats 2 cakes. I have guest list of 25 and personally i think its too expensive.

A lot of people do that and I hear it turns out great. I wanted to do that at first however my wedding party is small and only includes our children so we didn't have anyone reliable to get the sheet cake there.

That's exactly what we are doing! We're doing a smaller cake that can be served to head table and then sheet cakes will be served to guests! We aren't doing a different flavor of cake it'll just be round instead of a sheet cake Smiley smile

If you still want a big cake without the cost you could decorate a dummy cake your self(fondant lasts forever and works like play dough, has stensils to) and just incorporate the bakers bottom layer( depending on size serves alot)and top layer to it.

People do a sheet cake all the time! The only reason we're having a multi-tiered, larger cake is because it comes with our package (all-inclusive venue). I think the sheet cake is a great idea!

We are having a dessert table, cupcakes, and 2 sheet cakes. My grandmother wants us to have a wedding cake for pictures so she decided to purchase one. I don't really care for sweets.

Not tacky at all, we’ve decided a cake is at the bottom of our priority list with budget because of how much they cost, and our venue has very strict guidelines of how we can bring in outside dessert. So we are providing donuts for dessert (through our venue) and may opt to get a small cake to cut, but that will depend on our end budget.

Tiered cakes are expensive. My fiancé loves cake and we are paying over $2k for a 5 tier cake with 200-250 guests (I originally budgeted $800 for a cake but he insisted he wanted the whole fancy thing and is paying the extra for it). Some options we did talk about was having all the tiers separated except for 2 that we would display and cut, and the other tiers would be simply decorated and displayed on the same table but at all different levels. That would have fit our budget of about $800 and everyone would get a Decorated sliced piece from a tier and not an undecorated piece hidden in the back. We didn't want anyone to feel slighted with such a large wedding.

I agree with everyone! That is very common.

We are doing exactly that - a 2 tier cake for us to cut into, and then sheet cakes in various flavors! It definitely saves on cost and is practical - plus no one notices since the cake is cut in the back anyways (as you said). Good luck!

A decent baker should be able to do something of just about any size for a fairly reasonable price. My venue recommended to me a baker that works out of her farm with her family. She is making us a 2 layer cake of medium size with full dessert bar (chocolate chip cookies, mixed berry cobbler, lemon bars) and roughly $500 for all of it with the cake coming in about $350. Smaller tiered cakes are great for cutting and all of those special moments without bringing too much cost.

I can totally understand doing this! My mother in-law actually recommended a sheet cake for my fiance and I. We are doing a traditional tiered cake, but only because there's a certain design we want that can't be put on a sheet cake. But I see no problem in doing a sheet cake what so ever!
