Cake or Cupcakes

Martika, on October 18, 2018 at 1:49 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 64
Hey guys.
Has anyone did cupcakes rather than a wedding. A lot of bakery’s I’ve been to said they are seeing more and more people doing cupcakes instead of the traditional wedding cake. If you have done cupcakes instead of cake i would love your opinion about it, whether you wish you would have gone with the traditional wedding cake or if you are happy with what you picked. If you didn’t do cupcakes and did a traditional cake i want your opinion too. How much cake went to wasted things like that!

We did different desserts instead of a wedding cake and I have no regrets!

We are doing cupcakes for our wedding. This way we get a few different flavors and its easier to pass off left over cupcakes to people after the wedding than pieces of cake. The bakery is making a small cake on top to cut. It's also easier on the wait staff since people will come up and pick their own flavor

We did 3 different flavors of cupcakes. We have lots of gluten and dairy allergies to deal with so cupcakes were easier (we had 2 dozen gluten and dairy free cupcakes in 2 different flavors). We didn't do a cake cutting and people were able to just go grab a cupcake after dinner. I have no idea what the cost difference is because we didn't even price out actual cakes. We were also able to avoid the venue's cake cutting fee (or having to designate a family member to do it) but going with cupcakes.

I was thinking of doing different desserts as well. Not everyone likes cake.

We are doing a small cutting cake for pictures, then a mini dessert bar with brownies, cookies, cupcakes and cake pops.

I love that other people are doing this. I only want the traditional cake to cut into for the photos. I think doing different cupcakes and a small cake for just us would be fine.

I am trying to avoid spending another $150.00 on just cake cutting fees. If we could do cupcakes that would be ideal! Thank you

It seems like having cupcakes are the best idea especially with the different flavors you can do!

I asked my highly recommend baker, and she said cakes are always moister and don't dry out as fast. She refuses to make cupcakes. I do think they are fun. We were going to have some made in gluten free since I had alot of guests that needed that option.

We didn't have a cake at all. I don't understand having a cake for pictures, since your guests might wonder where the cake is. We fed each other our favorite cookie. We had 4 types of cookies, 2 flavors of mini cupcakes, 2 flavors of mini donuts, mini éclairs and cream puffs and 3 kinds of full size pie that was sliced right before it was put out. We also had treat bags for the end of the night in case guests wanted to take dessert home, which they did! I liked having a lot of variety and our guests did too. We definitely over-ordered but I didn't mind having some dessert to take home and my guests enjoyed being able to take some home too. Our dessert table was $700 for 73 guests, and was worth every penny.

Honestly, I don't think you can go wrong with having a cake, cupcakes or a variety of desserts - it's really a personal preference.

I am currently doing both! We are having a small simple cake that will feed 20 for pictures and then planning on serving guest cupcakes. It's easier you don't have to pay a cake cutting fee, or buy cake plates plus they can be just as pretty.

My daughter is having a 5 tier wedding cake along with some gluten and dairy free cupcakes. Her cake is included with the venue and doesn't have a cutting fee. She briefly considered doing all cupcakes but went with the cake instead because her wedding is formal and traditional. Personally I love seeing the cake, but whatever you chose will be fine Smiley smile

I was on the fence about cupcakes vs cake too! We decided on doing the cake. We have 130 guests but we got cake that serves 80-100 people knowing that not all guests will be ale to make it and that not all guests that attend the wedding will stay for cake.

I think wen we looked at the numbers that way it was cheaper (and easier) for us to just do the cake! Smiley smile

I’m having a formal plated dinner and think cupcakes would be too casual. Besides, I love wedding cake.

Hi Martika! Have you considered doing a small cake for a cake cutting ceremony and then getting cupcakes for the rest of your guests? It's the best of both worlds! This way, you can have a small wedding cake and offer your guests individual cupcakes in a variety of flavors! Smiley smile

We did cake with other desserts, we had cake left over, but NOTHING else.

Personally, I hate cupcakes at weddings. They have always been dry. But a cool dessert bar? I'll smash it.

I agree. I am really trying to avoid spending $150.00 on cake cutting. The $150.00 could be used on more desserts!

I've had the same concern with cupcakes because they easily get dried out. I went to a wedding show and this one vendor had bundt cakes and mini bundt cakes which were cupcakes. they were the most moist cake I have ever had. I bought a sample box of all the flavors and four days later they were still moist. If I decide to do cupcakes I will be going with this company.
