Cake in the face? Really?

June, on December 10, 2010 at 11:49 PM

Is it just me or is smashing cake in each other's face kind of mean? Am I being overly sensitive about this or does it bother anyone else? I don't see the humor in it, and I can make a joke about most anything . . . Anyone have an opinion on it?

I think its tacky and messy..I don't want to waste art of my wedding time cleaning up.

I rather spend the time eating the cake that sone one worked so hard to make for us Smiley winking

I think the use of the word 'tacky' is used too carelessly.

The cake cutting issue is the same as flowers,a lot of people say silk flowers are tacky.

I think anything can be done in a 'tasteful' (no pun intended! lol) manner and even if it's messy,as long as it's what the couple wants and it's fun, more power to them!

This coming from someone who doesn't desire to have frosting in my hair or on my dress :p

Okay, if tacky is careless, I will say it this way. In my opinion, cake smashing is stupid and classless. Dumb, dumb, dumb. Is that better than tacky? ;-)

Absolutely ridicoulous! If my FS does that I will be so po at him, I may not even speak to him the rest of the night ... Everyone seems to think it's absolutely hilarious but it's not ... It is tacky, classless and ridiculous ... I don't see the humor in it ... yeah if you can't get the jist I will be VERY UPSET if that happens to me ... I don't even wanna feed each other cake ...

FI and I are going to feed each other a piece of cake, and I've asked him not to smash me with any cake and he's agreed. I didn't threaten him verbally, but I think he knows he would be in some deep poop for a LONG time if he did it...and I'd probably punch him lol (and I know how, we're both black belts, but I've been one longer lol).

We've talked about it and neither one of us likes the idea of smashing cake in each other's faces. We do want to feed each other though.

Feeding cake should be just that, feeding cake to each other. This symbolizes the support you will provide for each other throughout your many years of marriage.

I really don't think that smashing the cake in each others face is the symbolism you want shown at your marriage of what you will provide for each other. After smashing the cake you have the rest of the day with sticky frosting in your hair and pictures still to take. It just seems so needless kind of mean. It also seems to get out of hand at times.

My point wasn't that people who dislike the tradition are uptight, my point was that being concerned with appearance over fun is possibly a little uptight on what is supposed to be the most fun party at this point in your life. The only pictures worth seeing are the ones of things that happened.

Smushing a little cake into my hubby's face symbolizes the playfulness that I hope pervades every minute of my marriage for the rest of our lives. And the above pictures are adorable - I love the kissing one with all the frosting.

I guess some people use words in a blunt manner to describe how they feel about things...I try not to do it since I feel there I less critical ways to express ones views. But that's how I am and I suppose it's good to have some people who just say what they think and not worry about how it sounds to others Smiley winking

I had forgotten to warn FH that is was a tradition; he ducked like a boxer when I went for it he could not understand what I was trying to do, and despite my best efforts, no cake went in his face, it was even funnier than planned

I'm not going to lie...I would really like to nicely feed him, be nicely fed then smash a pie in his face. But cake in my face...I think not. haha

Already warned FH that if he even thinks about doing that at our wedding I'm going to punch him (and he could very well end up spending the wedding night locked out of the suite0. After spending all that time and money to get someone to do my makeup I'm not going to have it ruin by cake.

Everyone was chanting and egging us on, but we refused. After almost an hour getting that make-up just right, that was a good thing!

I don't like cake in the face and don't want it in my face. The first photographer I met with had a picture in one of her albums with a person who had cake in their face and I said wow she got him good and the photographer said they used the WHOLE cake to fight with...seriously why pay all that money for a cake?

For some reason my FH is super excited about filling up my nostrils with cake.

I told him if he's to do that, then he's in for a very lonely honeymooon lol.

As some said, I don't mind a little dab, but if I end up in the ER with cake being pumped outta my lungs, he's in BIG trouble.

Um yeah I had no idea people felt so strongly about this. I don't think I want cake in the face, but I certainly don't look down on people who do. I agree with Ryan S. It's playful and that is all. I can think of a few other things that people do at weddings that scream "trailer park" more so than a little cake in the face. Geez.

Some friends of ours have polled people who are divorced and if they smashed cake in the face or not. If cake was smashed, they're divorced. It may be a fluke, but it seems too big of a coincidence to risk it. My first marriage-he smashed cake in my face (and up my nose) and we're divorced (obviously). It's not happening at this one. It may be funny to others watching, but it sure isn't when it's you and you're in a beautiful dress and have your hair and makeup all done...and you're digging frosting out of your nose. Smiley smile
