Cake in the face? Really?

June, on December 10, 2010 at 11:49 PM

Is it just me or is smashing cake in each other's face kind of mean? Am I being overly sensitive about this or does it bother anyone else? I don't see the humor in it, and I can make a joke about most anything . . . Anyone have an opinion on it?

We did it! It was fun Smiley smile We did have the wedding at my parents house though so it was easy to just run in the house and clean up. Heres some of our pics! We love each other still! And i smashed fist!

When I was a kid, I asked my dad if they were going to do the cake smashing at his wedding to my step-mom. He said, no, it's disrespectful. For some reason that always stuck with me and now I can't stand the tradition.

    @Jenni, those are so cute!

Although FH and i won't do that, I don't want makeup ruined and dont' want to spend the rest of the reception paranoid i still have some on my face, plus i don't really eat cake..but I think that if it works with the personality of the couple then it's fine (plus it can be pretty entertaining for the guests), no need to judge others' choices! :-)

Feeding cake to each other is symbolic of your promises to provide for each other.

I did my own make-up and didn't want to re-do it, so made hubby promise no cake smashing. It had never even occurred to him and he had no idea why anyone would want to do it.

If you've paid $$$$ for make-up & hair & dress, why would you want to ruin it.

I think it was kinda an old tradition to smash cake in eachothers face, only because after they cut the cake it was time to go. BUt H*** no for me. I think it's childish too. We did that at our kids first birthdays. My oldest cried, and my second child ate it. Can't wait to see what happens at my last child birthday!

I don't even like getting water on my face in the shower - I keep a dry washcloth in there!! This came up a few weeks ago. I told FH I'd have a divorce lawyer on standby if he did this to me. I compromised to a tiny dot of frosting on the nose, but I still don't like that idea. I have a phobia about stuff on my face, it seems really disrespectful, and MESSY. We'll probably just let the baby have all the messy cake-face pictures Smiley smile

We did not smash it in each other's faces, but we did play a trick on my sister and his brother (MOH & BM) that was suggested by the DJ. We cut the cake and then were to go out on the dance floor to feed it to each other. She had my girls line up behind me with the MOH right behind me and the same with the guys behind him with the BM right behind him. She then counted to 3 and instead of feeding each other, we each went to the right and smashed in into the MOH's & BM's faces. His brother does videography at weddings, and later said he knew what was going to happen, but let me do it anyway. My sister did not see it coming either. The pictures are awesome and our guests loved it. They both laughed it off, but my sister is kind of dramatic about when looking through the pics. After that, we then got to feed each other our pieces.

I don't care whos face cake is smashed in, I find it to be totally tacky. JMHO.

If I were a MOH, and had someone smash cake in my face as a "trick", I'm afraid that the bride and groom would not like the response.

Both my sister & his brother are very light hearted...we wouldn't have done it if we had any notion that either would be upset by it.

Hey,if it's what you want to do I think it's kinda cute...I however do NOT want it done to me (worried about the cleanup etc) and have threatened to take away his wedding night sex if he does it to me.He knows I'm serious too....lol

We did it, and it was hilarious...but we're playful and silly about almost everything (re: mud run profile photo), and I also ended up being the bride who tripped over her dress and faceplanted in the middle of the dance floor. Life is too short to take seriously. And I didn't wear enough makeup for it to be even affected (pretty much only eye makeup and a bit of bronzer to even my skin).

The videos I've seen of it make me not like it. In fact, the people in the videos always seem to get almost violent with it.... I think it's one thing to put a dab of icing on the nose but when you put the entire piece of cake on someone's face.... that's unacceptable to me. I'd have to say this is a "don't" plus, it mess up your makeup.

@Ryan, one does not have to "not take life seriously" to hate the cake smashing thing.

I am currently in the wine biz, but have a long history with rock stars. I still think that cake smashing is STUPID!

Again, JMHO. But do not make is appear that only uptight people hate cake smashing, because that simply, aint true. ;-)

@Rane, I agree, it seems that those that do cake smash are almost angry. Again, tacky!

So I don't care about the cake smashing one way or the other.

@ Jenni, those pics are great and fun!

So, if you like it do it and if not don't. Talk to FH and come to an agreement. If playful and sticky seems fun do it. If elegant is more your style don't.

If smashing cake is really his thing but you're concerned about the makeup maybe save it for later... the bedroom can be a great place for cake - think, cake for breakfast snacking on each other and the hotel does the laundry!!!!!
