Cake flavors?

Eri, on September 17, 2020 at 10:24 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 14

What kind of cake did you have/are you having?

We were initially planning a 4-tier cake but it looks like it'll be 2-tier now and we're trying to decide on flavors.

I was thinking one tier of almond cake with lemon curd filling and American buttercream; the second tier would be marble cake with strawberries & cream filling and whipped buttercream.

FH thinks that almond and lemon do not go together at all and thinks we should swap the fillings. I think this would work too but can't decide.

What do you guys think? I don't care either way as long as I get my lemon curd filling somewhere!

Have you done a cake tasting? If not, I strongly suggest it! Your fiance might change his mind and like the flavor combination of almond and lemon, or you might find a different combination with the lemon that you like even better!

I think you need to do a cake testing to know. For our flavors we would have never thought what we chose went together but somehow it did. Your cake place should offer a cake tasting even if it is to go. Smiley smile

I’ve never had almond so I couldn’t tell you
But we are having a 2 tier cake for us to cut. It will be salted caramel. Then we have having cupcakes for our guest. Chocolate based option will be Oreo and vanilla based option will be salted caramel. We are trying to decide if we want to add turtle or not

Our cake was vanilla rainbow, and we served cupcakes to our guests. Chocolate with cookie dough filling, caramel apple, and strawberry. I agree with PPs that it would be best to do a tasting before making a decision.

Agree with the others- do your cake tasting now. I also agree with your FH almond cake is amazing but not sure with the lemon...

We had a 2 tier cake. The bottom tier was cinnamon brown sugar with cinnamon buttercream frosting. The top tier was vanilla and fresh strawberries with vanilla buttercream frosting. We also had a full dessert bar.

Have you done a cake tasting with a baker yet? That was one of my favorite parts of wedding planning and really helped us decide on the flavors we wanted for our cake.

Yes, we have done a consultation and tasting (back in February) - but that was primarily to try individual frostings and basic cake flavors, not the specialty fillings.

The bakery can do a ton of combinations but don't always have all of them available for tasting. I'm calling them later today about options but just wanted some opinions. Smiley smile

I ordered what my dh like best. German dark chocolate cake and ordered 50% less sugar. Maybe discuss it with your fh first? I would suggest to go with your and your fh favorite.

They can give you guys the specialty. I would do that because the cake flavors we are set on for our cake some tasted dry. We ended up choosing chocolate and strawberry (strawberry is a specialty flavor) and a strawberry mousse filling which was also premium. I would have never thought those two would go well but we both loved. I think almond a lemon filling would work because almond is not a strong cake flavor but it may not pair well with lemon filling. I would splurge because no so much for your guests but you two should love the options.

We just did vanilla cake with vanilla icing. I wanted something simple. My husband's favorite was strawberry cake, but I'm allergic to strawberries. I also don't really like chocolate cake.

I think they'd work well together, but now I'm second guessing myself! Smiley laugh

Are you more sold on the almond cake or the lemon curd filling? You could always ask the baker what the most popular pairings for each are! Smiley cake

We did marble with chocolate filling, because I don't believe in cakes without chocolate.
