Cake Cutting??

Riss, on May 22, 2010 at 11:05 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 25

What IS the cake cutting fee and what does the job of cake cutter include? Who typically does it?? The cake vendor, or the caterer??

Fee is different for each venue. Our caterer does not charge a fee b/c they do not cut the cake. We are having a friend cut the cake (she offered). I have seen fees from $1-$2 per person to cut it though at venues we first looked at. If you pay a fee through the caterer they would cut it. The cake vendor only makes the cake and delivers/sets it up.

This seems weird to me, i always thought it was someone in the family that cuts the cake. why pay someone to do that?

Our baker is cutting the cake. It is included with her service. Along with delivery, set up, and packaging of cake. But like Mrs horning said it all depends just ask ask

I grew up in the catering business and we never ever ever charged a cake cutting fee, that is just ridiculous! Another way for wedding vendors to soak their brides and grooms on the happiest day of their lives! I worked for a Catering hall once and it isn't anything special, the cake has to be cut for goodness sakes, the waitresses or waiters do it in the kitchen, big deal! No one should be charged a fee to have their cake cut when they same people who serve dinner are serving it anyway. Sorry, this turned into a vent, but it's just crazy the things caterers will charge for!!!!!

I think (without looking at my contract cuz I'm at work) our venue is charging $25 to cut the cake and serve it.

Juanita...you cut the first slice in front of everyone, but then they usually take the cake to the back to cut the whole thing to be served.

Some charge for it, some don't. I had an outside baker do our cake and our venue didn't charge a cake cutting fee.... they did charge $1 per guest to have more than two choices of entrees though. As long as you know about the small fees some of these places tack on you will be fine

For all of you guys getting a friend/family member to cut the cake for you remember this it's not like cutting a reg cake. When you tell your baker you want a cake that serves 100 people well they make it so you have 100 little squares pieces. You can look it up on Youtube how to cut your wedding cake. they will show you how. I hope this helps

I think that the cake cutting fee is the absolute dummest fee for weddings! I remember when I was looking online at venues I could not believe some of the prices for cake cutting. One was $200! Fortunately, I found a place where there is no charge. They offered to cut and serve for free, however it looks like our baker will now cut it because she stays with the cake.

Cutting a wedding cake can be tricky. Particularly with a tiered cake. In other words, cutting even a 3 tiered cake can be quite 'tough' for most people and it's easy to make a mistake. The 'cake cutting fee' is for two things - the knowledge to cut it correctly, (in other words, for not destroying your cake), and the 'manpower' to do it and get it served.

    .

Sometimes people will do this for 'free' as part of their other services they're providing, or it will be 'nominal'. Sometimes, it's not so nominal because you don't have a choice and the venue requires you let them do it (they have a monopoly).

    .

It's most important that you just be aware of the charges, how they add up, and if there are alternatives if you don't want to pay the 'price'.

I've never heard of a friend/fam member cutting the cake. I've always known the caterer to do it so it is done neatly and professionally. I look at it as just like Thanksgiving: you don't want just anyone carving your turkey right?

Our Venue usually charges 1.75 per person I think its nuts. Luckly they are not charging us a fee.

Cake cutting fee is such a load of bull, IMO. Some of the venues we visited charged as much as $2/slice to CUT...that's as much as we might have paid for the cake itself!!!

Thankfully, the venue we chose also owns a high-end bakery, so the cake is included in the price of our reception and they will not charge a fee to cut the darn thing.

My family also traditionally had someone special who wasn't asked to be in the bridal party but they wanted to honor... like a great aunt, or very close friend of the family...

Yeah, we were thinking FH's aunt would be great for the job. She is very particular and organized so she could definatley handle a job like this!

Yeah in our family tradition has always been the aunts..so my 2 aunts and FH are in charge of cake. Plating, cutting what have you. Our wedding cake itself is only feeding us and our wedding party. There are sheet cakes coming from a local grocer that are pre cut..so we lucked out ;-) But we also aren't doing the whole caterer thing and we're small town folk lol
