Ok lovely fiancés and fiancées! Speak to me of your cake inspiration. What flavour do you want, what design do you want, and overall, how important is the cake for you? Or maybe you're doing a cheese tower, a doughnut wall or a croquembouche instead? Speak to me of your thing that you will cut!

Here are some fun inspo pics to get us started...

Those look sooooo good right now! May need a late night snack 😂 We are hoping to have something like this design, with either artificial or real flowers (in lieu of sugar/gum paste flowers), in almond with a raspberry filing. cake cake Cake! 6

    I'll start with the answers...

our colours are creams, peachy pink, ballet pink and spring green. We wanted a cake that was not too fussy or formal, with and English cottage garden feel. We asked for semi-naked (not fully iced) and for seasonal fruits to be mixed in with flowers supplied by our florist.

The inspo pictures we gave our cake maker were:

Flavour wise, we went with two layers - one banana, and one strawberry butter cake (which is like, a white cake with splodges of pink through it!) mostly based on how they tasted but also how they looked too! The frosting between the layers will be cream cheese.

Before we started looking at cakes, I had hoped for something that sounded super fancy and interesting - like a hummingbird cake, a lemon and elderflower cake with earl grey filling, or a swiss chocolate ganache cake with hazelnut praline made by hand by pixies - you know - something that sounds amazing, like you read in all of those Martha Stewart or Vogue wedding articles! But when the time came to hunt for such a thing, we really couldn't get anything that interesting at all. Most places stocked a lot of very dense, heavy mudcakes (which apparently aren't common in the US but are VERY common in Australia - they are a cake which is almost a cross between a brownie and a cake - super rich and very filling) - but I don't like mudcake and didn't want one, so we were really rather limited on what we could get! Our cake lady did make us a hummingbird sample, but to be honest the flavours we ended up choosing were much nicer than the hummingbird she was, so why fight fate? Banana cake it is!

Woah! I hadn’t even thought to investigate all those options, Rosie! And your cake sounds amazing! We wanted to do everything local, so we were limited to pretty traditional options. But, as they all tasted good, we are happy 👍

Yes, same! I originally wanted hummingbird because my fiance's favourite fruit is pineapple, and my favourite cake is carrot, so I thought a combo of them both in the hummingbird would be a nice blend of both of us, but the cake itself just wasn't our cake maker's best.

I wondered briefly if banana cake was too... basic? Here in Australia, when I think banana cake, I think the kind of cheap, cheerful cake your mum would buy for you to take as afternoon tea at a friend's house - like this:

but it tasted so good that in the end I decided it didn't matter. Plus, as I said, we have desserts as part of our food package, so it really doesn't matter - people will have loads of options for sweet things!

That is a sweet idea! My fiancé loves most desserts, but I’m pretty picky… so it’s probably a good thing we didn’t have a lot of options or try other bakers.

Oh no! 😂 I don’t think anyone would think that! I’m sure it will be great! And lots of options is always a good thing!

I really love this cake !! I definitely want my wedding cake to look similar but the bottom layer won’t be that wood looking color I’d want that to be a rust color too!! I haven’t spoke with a baker yet (our wedding is in September) so I’m not exactly sure on the flavors yet !

Ooh so pretty! To me I feel like a fall kind of cake has to be like, a spice cake, a chocolate cake, a hazelnut or salted caramel, to fit that woodland vibe!

What gorgeous cakes everyone is posting! The flavors sound delicious as well Smiley smile

I will be going against the majority at the moment and say that my cake design was a very low priority for me. We actually opted for a sheet cake and that was what we cut in front of our guests and fed each-other our first bites of cake.
This is not always the case but I’ve heard of beautiful tiered cakes only having real cake on the top tier. Later the caterers take the cake into the kitchen and cut up slices of a sheet cake! Has anyone else heard of this done?
A few reasons I chose a sheet cake: less expensive than a tiered cake, people only see it for a little while before it is cut into pieces and disappears into everyone’s mouth! And lastly, it was a casual affair so it didn’t seem out of place. I’m thinking though, if we had a fancier venue I still might have gone sheet rather than tier!
We chose a chocolate cake with cannoli cream filling with a white/vanilla buttercream frosting. Our florist also left some extra stemmed flowers and they bordered the sheet cake with these flowers! We also had assorted Italian pastries on platters and an iced and hot coffee bar!

We went back and forth on what to do about the cake, since our caterer already provides a variety of desserts. Finally, we decided to get a two-tier cake just for us. We don't eat kosher, but some of our guests do, so we have to use a kosher bakery even though the guests won't even eat the cake. Sadly, the bakery doesn't have a lot of interesting flavors. We're getting chocolate for the top tier (fiancé won't eat any other kind of dessert) and vanilla cake with latte filling for the bottom.

Here's the photo of the design inspiration. Light blue and white, fairly simple:cake cake Cake! 14
We have an origami theme for all our décor, so the cake topper will be two paper cranes dressed like a bride and groom.

We knew we wanted to have quite a few options because both of us are pretty picky about what we like and if we stuck to only that there wouldn't be much variety for guests. My fiancé will only eat chocolate cake and he hates frosting, so our small wedding cake will be a semi-naked chocolate cake with chocolate mousse filling and vanilla buttercream. We're also having 3 different types of cupcakes and mini cupcakes: red velvet (my favorite), vanilla cake with strawberry filling and wedding buttercream (this tastes like strawberry shortcake and is AMAZING) and a spice cake with apple pie filling and caramel buttercream.

These are the inspiration for flower placement/cake topper for our florist and baker. The flowers will be white roses with eucalyptus. We will also have figurines made of both of our dogs and will have them sitting on/next to the cake!

We are doing a small cake just for cake cutting (and for us to enjoy the days after our wedding), and are serving tiramisu for dessert! Our cake will be red velvet. We're still stuck on the specific design, though we plan to incorporate our cat into the design somehow. Currently, we're thinking it'll look somewhat like a mix of these two designs (except ours will be a 1- or 2-tier cake instead of 3-4 tiers):

When i was looking for cake i REALLY wanted a square cake - i mean it would not be a deal breaker if i did not get but i just liked the look!

anyway, around where i live it was hard finding someone to actually do a square cake! let alone for a decent price. i wasn't really thinking about flavors much but i ended up with largest tier as mango and the other two tiers as strawberry

My fiancé doesn’t want to do cake actually but it will probably be cheaper. So far, the plan is to order a small tiered cake from a local bakery (gluten free, dairy free for me 😅). Simple design with flowers on it and hopefully not too much icing. We still haven’t decided on a flavor. Maybe carrot cake or lemon. Then I’m hoping to make some of my spicy cupcakes and maybe pecan pie so we have a variety. I’m going to experiment and see if they would be good if made a few weeks before and frozen.

I really want a monochromatic cake like this one. I’m also going to have figurines made of my dogs and put them on the cake as shown in the other pic. cake cake Cake! 20cake cake Cake! 21

We are keeping our top tier (to freeze for our 1 year anniversary), so, instead of adding additional tiers or making the bottom two tiers larger, our bakery recommended two sheet cakes to accommodate our full guest list. It’s saves money, and the guests will get their slices far quicker. Win, win!

We are doing cake mapping so we will have a three tier square white cake. With lemon dream filling. It’s my favorite filling from my favorite cookies my fiancé bake at the bakery he works at. I’m really excited for our guests to see it!
