I think if your reception isn’t starting until 4, you need to serve a meal, especially if you’re expecting people to stick around more than an hour or so.

When does the reception end? Because they are definitely going to need something other than cake if you expect your guests to stay longer.

Due to the time and the fact that you’re serving alcohol, it’s a good idea to have food. Even if it’s just an assortment of appetizers.

I would suggest serving some sort of meal due to them drinking alcohol.

If the reception will go past 5 PM, I'd serve a full meal.

A 4pm reception is going into dinnertime so serve a full meal.. Also many people don't like the taste combination of alcohol and sweets, plus the sugar in the cake will accelerate the drunk effect in your blood system.


Cake and coffee/punch is perfectly ok if the reception starts at 2 or late night.
