Cake and Punch reception advice

Josh's Girl, on December 1, 2012 at 11:26 PM Posted in Planning 0 5

We had planned a full meal reception for October but now we are moving the date up to 2/13/13 and I have 0 ideas about where to start with this idea. We have the space from 2pm-10pm and will have the ceremony outside and than an indoor reception, obviously not all the time will be used but there is set up and take down to think about. So I am trying to figure out timing, help?

Also I dont know how long it should be and how it should be layed out, all at tables, assigned tables or let people mingle, and slow dancing or no dancing?

As for the menu we will have wedding cake , a dessert table with pie, cookies, and tarts. Then a fruit table with dipping chocolate and also meat and cheese tray and finger sandwhiches. Also punch, lemonade and hot tea like from a teapot.

We will be putting cake and punch reception to follow on invites so people are aware and I only have maybe 1/10th OOT guests out of 70 invites.

I'd do the ceremony at 2pm, and then the reception immediately after. People will probably want to leave by dinnertime if you aren't serving dinner...

Do you have an option to do it any earlier in the day?

My advice get creative with your desserts. if that's the only option they are having then I would get creative with the desserts/decor of the table to give them something visual yet tasty. I think it will be really cute especially with your date & theme Smiley smile

These are one of the desserts I'm having on my table (just to give you an example)

Have you already booked the reception area or are you set on that site? The timing is a bit off for a cake/punch reception since unless you can have almost no decor and only spend 30mins-1hr decorating, everything will run into dinnertime and people will be hungry. If you can't change the time, maybe you could find some really cheap catering? BBQ buffets can be pretty affordable.

I do love the cake/punch idea and your theme, but I because of when you are allowed to enter the venue, I think your only option would be to start your reception at about 2:30 so you have 2-3 hours before people want to start leaving for dinner.
