Cake and desssert bar?

Lydia, on October 29, 2020 at 9:35 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 22
So I want to do cake and a dessert bar. My boyfriend and I eat a lot and I’m big into sweets. My mom thinks I’m crazy. How is the best way to go about this or should I ditch the idea? I was thinking of putting out bags/boxes so guests can take the dessert bar items home as a favor. If weee having cake how many items in the bar should we have? We want chocolate covered strawberries, cookies and rice krispy treats. Like the fancy ones dipped in chocolate and stuff

That sounds so good to me! I think if you can have each item already individually wrapped due to covid, it would be better though

Do you think 250 items would be good for 80 people or can we get away with less since we plan to have cake too

A dessert bar is a pretty common thing, at least at weddings in my area. They usually call the Viennese tables.

Cut that in half. Get a small 2 tier cake. Figure on 2 pieces of dessert per person..and some won't have any (maybe they have health concerns or aren't into sweets)

We are also having a 3 tier cake and Venetian table!! They both come with our package, and we are putting to-go boxes next to the Venetian table so guests can take some home. I don’t have an actual count to give you since both things are in our package based on our guest count of about 90 people, but with my crowd I know I can’t go wrong with desserts 😊

Nope! The Viennese table is always in addition to a multi-tier wedding cake lol. These Viennese tables have cookies, brownies, cannoli, chocolates, tarts, and so on. I've seen them at lots of weddings and no one has ever complained about to many desserts lol.

Dessert bars are very common, but I would definitely make alterations because of COVID. Everything should be individually wrapped.

Planning on having chocolate covered toffee individually packaged that will be put on the table while people are dancing. They can snack on them &/or take them home.

I agree with this completely! I feel as though many weddings/events have both cake and a dessert bar.

We did a dessert bar! We had a 2 tier wedding cake, plus Oreo shooters, banana pudding shooters, mini cheesecakes, donuts, and cookies.

I did a cake and dessert bar too! We had about 25 people total. We did a small 1 tier wedding cake for my husband and I to cut and to have all to ourselves. And then we had churro cupcakes, small apples pies, and pumpkin cheesecakes. It was all a hit with our guests! I also had take home boxes in case guests wanted to take some extra with them.

Our baker knew how many desserts/servings to provide based on the number of people we are having. So I would talk to your bakery if unsure how many.

Well we want our guests to be able to have cake too. And the bar will be provided by my cousin who has a small business making those things. Mine will be her largest order ever so that won’t be much help lol. I’ve been getting the range of responses. Maybe I need to just figure out my total dessert budget: cake + extras and go from there

You should do what you and your man want.Doing or not doing something because of someone who is not your groom always shocks me when I read posts from this forum.
Even when parents are paying or contributing because their money should be a heartfelt gift, no strings attached.
Doing a cake + a dessert bar or a cake + one (or 2 or even 3 ) other desserts is more common than you think because not everybody likes cakes . Don't forget it's your and fiancé's day. Mom has the right to give an opinion but ... it is an opinion, nothing more. You and fiancé(e) have the final say. Plus it sounds like you and you man feel (very)strongly about this stuff, so go for it !?

Lol Yeah of course I totally I ageee. I didn’t mean to come off as caring about her opinion too much. Im just questioning if it’s a waste of money to do both because we want a full cake which is gonna be like $300 plus another $300 for the extra desserts. And I think I’m being modest on those estimates

I don't think you will waste your money if you do it because you offer them a better experience and many people are big into sweets but don't admit it since it's not healthy lol.
Plus some of your guests might hatecakes in general, so they have more options . It worth the extra cost since catering is one of the top priorities,if not THE priority . If you and you groom want it and you can afford it ... problem solved.
You can also trim your budget for things that are not important for you to afford your cake+dessert bar. My bride really want to do a dessert bar with a cake and said we should to trim somewhere else in order to keep our budget 'on track',.Flowers( other than guy's and groomswomen's boutonieres/corsages, bride's and bridesmaid's bouquets),centerpieces, favors and decor are a waste of money in my opinion; nobody will care about them and won't remember that the day after, but will care about food, drink, dessert, mingling (and dancing if you're having a DJ or band). I personnaly feel strongly about NOT having a large wedding party and not having any flower girls/ring bearer at all in order to afford important stuff like an open bar, an awesome DJ , a beautiful venue ...

And I almost forgot: don't worry about "uneated" cake slices and desserts . You can save the top layer of your cake for future anniversaries and/or provides your guests with cake/dessert bags or boxes.
