Butterfly release?

Jess and Douglas, on February 8, 2012 at 2:05 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 32

I love butterflies. I draw them all the time. I heard this when I was little from my aunt "An Indian Legend says that if anyone desires a wish to come true they must capture a butterfly and whisper that wish to it. Since they make no sound, they can't tell the wish to anyone but the Great Spirit. So by making the wish and by releasing the butterfly it will be taken to the heavens and be granted." and it stuck.

I want to realse some at my wedding. Has anyone done this or have anyone they would suggest to order from?

A friend of mine did this and got some great pictures of some of the butterflies landing on her dress.

Oh my gosh that would be so amazing. I have never seen this done but I could imagine how beautiful that would be.

I looked into it....I thought it would be awesome. There are a bunch of sites that mail you butterflies and boxes to put them in. We couldn't do it because we are getting married in a state park and we aren't allowed to bring in "foreign species" =( Do a google search and you'll get a bunch of different places.

My sister did this. She did manage to get a few pictures of a butterfly on her dress and stuff but a bunch of the butterflies died in the little box they put them in... so it didn't work out too well.. Maybe it was because of heat idk... but i can tell you it sounds a lot better then it works.

They did it on an episode of 4 weddings and it didn't look like it went over as planned either.

If I remember correctly, Cydney J posted a long time ago about having some experience with this (not at her wedding but at another). I don't know why I can remember that, but not what today is....Might be worth a PM.

My cousin had them at his wedding. They were kind of all... "asleep" in the box and it turned out to be kind of sad/gross. Something to think about at least.

You may want to consider incorporate the butterfly theme in some other way, like having a fake one in/on your bouqet?

We dont want to use them as a theme. There is a local company here that could do it but I wanted to hear about other releases because I didnt want to end up with dead butterflies. The butterflies are my thing lol

From what I read into it they are asleep because your supposed to keep then cool until 15 minutes before the release then they are awake and ready to go

It sounds pretty, but I'm not sure it would work as planned (though I've never seen it). I would consider this:

"The National Wildlife Federation discourages releases of commercially obtained butterflies for a number of reasons, including:

Releasing butterflies can result in the possible introduction of species into areas where they are not native, possible carrying and spreading diseases at the same time.

Even if a species is native, a farmed population has a different genetic make-up than the population into which it is being introduced. This might result in negative effects on local populations."

    More reasons against here: http://www.naba.org/releases.html

Butterfly releases can be tricky. My friend did this when she got married 3 years ago...She forgot to put them into the sun to help 'wake' them up...and when they did the release they didn't really 'fly' off...they just kind of fluttered a few feet and then landed.

Here are some pictures from her wedding...excuse my tard look on my face...they caught me in the middle of a blink. LOL

If you are going to do this...make sure you really follow the directions....otherwise it won't work as well. What places have you looked at for this?

    EDIT: @Juliette...GREAT MEMORY!! LOL

Most of the time butterfly releases don't turn out well. Some butterflies die in the box, and some just don't wake up enough to fly away. I've never really seen it turn out well.

Jess...I honestly would just save your money on this one and put it towards something else you really want. I could call my friend and ask her if she'd do the butterfly release again if she could do it all over again...

I love the idea but I have never heard of it working...

There was that episode of I Do Over- where when the bride and groom tried to release them they were all dead. IDK if thats something I want to take a gamble with...
