I love butterflies. I draw them all the time. I heard this when I was little from my aunt "An Indian Legend says that if anyone desires a wish to come true they must capture a butterfly and whisper that wish to it. Since they make no sound, they can't tell the wish to anyone but the Great Spirit. So...

I love butterflies. I draw them all the time. I heard this when I was little from my aunt "An Indian Legend says that if anyone desires a wish to come true they must capture a butterfly and whisper that wish to it. Since they make no sound, they can't tell the wish to anyone but the Great Spirit. So by making the wish and by releasing the butterfly it will be taken to the heavens and be granted." and it stuck.

I want to realse some at my wedding. Has anyone done this or have anyone they would suggest to order from?

Sadly, this is what happens at the releases b/c the butterflies are still 'sleeping' or dead. :-/

I wouldn't do it.....I feel like it's really cruel to the animals. From what I've read, so many of them die in the process. It's not something I would want to do to an animal that I love.

Plus they're not trained performance animals, so you have no guarantee whether they are even going to cooperate or not. And it seems bad for the environment too, if you're potentially releasing a species of insect and/or any pollen/disease/etc they might be carrying into the wild.

Sorry. I vote no. Smiley sad

I've done this twice. It didn't "work' either time. I vote no.

I vote no just for ethical reasons. #1 you could possibly be introducing foreign species which could cause considerable damage to the ecosystem all in the name of a "butterfly release".

#2 its just cruel. like most have stated, they die in the process. not that butterflies have an exponentially long lifespan, but their life shouldnt be sacrificed for you to have pretty pictures. i feel like that is slapping mother nature in the face.

i think dove releases are 30x worse. dont even get me started on that. lol!

Carly, why do you say Dove release is worse?? I really want to do that...

I read couple of websites where they "train" them like messenger birds, & you can only release them while its still light out, so they can fly back, & they can fly up to 200 miles...

I really want to do the release of Doves, but now I am curious to hear Carly side that it might change my mind...

Celia, have you had anyone do that at one of your ceremonies?

There is a company that makes rice butterflies and when released they look like real live butterflies so you get the feel and beauty of an actual butterfly release, but nothing has to die Smiley smile

    Here's the website...

I absolutely love butterflies too! We are having our ceremony and reception indoors so we can't do a release. We are looking into creating butterfly habitats that will hold 3 butterflies as our centerpieces. Since we are having an evening wedding we will hold on to them until the following day where we can release in an appropriate area.
