Buffet Reception Timeline?

Emily, on July 9, 2019 at 9:30 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 3
We will be doing all photos before the wedding. The wedding is in New Orleans, so we will arrive at the reception at the same time as the guests, since we will all be Second Lining (parading/walking) over together. We REALLY do NOT want to make our guests wait to eat. The reception will begin at 7, and we have several guests who are children or just older adults who are accustomed to eating earlier in the evening. Have you ever seen a reception where the guests were allowed to line up for food before the entrance of the bride and groom? Or, if you had a similar situation, what was your reception timeline?

Instead of a cocktail hour, we had appetizers served the moment everyone entered the room. So people had food in their hands during we had our entrance, first dance, speeches, etc. Dinner was served an hour later. I thought that was a great flow. However, the guests also didn't bottleneck, since they got it once they came in.

I'm concerned that what your describing might. You don't want the buffet line to slow down your entrance!

Im by no means an expert, but Ive had similar concerns. Were doing 90% of the pics beforehand, the remainder with groom and myself together will be after ceremony. Our wedding is at 4. Were also having a buffet but I think were going to have some snacks finger foods during the "cocktail hour", then we will have our entrance and were planning to do dance, garter toss, game etc while everyone eats, kinda like dinner and a show. Lol i have no idea how well it will work but it did good at a friends wedding we recently attended.

    Hi Emily!

If you're arriving at the reception at the same time as the guests (7PM) and you would like to go straight into foodservice, could you hold it for 10 minutes until the entrance of the bride and groom is over? You could serve the food straight away and then continue with the night's events.

As Nikita suggested, could you have some appetizers served in the room to keep guests going until after the entrance?
