Buffet first, then first dances??

DMN, on May 7, 2015 at 10:12 PM Posted in Planning 0 12

So we're doing a huge buffet. I'm a firm believer that if we're going to have an open bar, to make sure everyone eats well. Well the buffet can take longer. Traditionally you do the first dance and Father daughter dance before the meal. My question, would there be a downside to eating first and once the last of the line sat down or when we were done eating(which ever is last) starting those dances?? That way people are still eating, and not twiddling there thumbs while we do both dances. The venue is small enough that everyone seated would have a great view of us. Is there a huge downside I'm missing here?

I think this is fine. It's what I plan on doing. We already won't be sitting down to eat until 8:30... I don't want to make people wait any longer.

No downside besides maybe getting less of people's attention. once u serve dinner people are focused on that and on table conversations-- people might not pay attention at all- if you dont care about that then go for it!

I don't think there is anything wrong either..that's what I'm doing. It just makes more sense for me. I don't want everyone just standing around.

Your guests will thank you for it. It's a good time for speeches too.

It makes sense but I agree with @angel_d about not being so focused.

From my experience, people tend to watch for about 15 to 30 seconds and start talking amongst each other anyways. No one just stares at the first dances until they're done. So it may take away some of the attention, but I think the guest will appreciate it for sure. Thank you for the responses!!

Where I live, we do dinner first. After dinner, first dances. After the dances, the dance floor is open for everyone. First dance signals the start of the party! You'll be fine!

We did what Wendy C did. Walked in. First dance. Buffet. Father daughter/mother son dance.

Edit: I don't remember if my speeches were before or after dinner.

I'm curious about this too. My guests will already be at their tables in my yard and the food will be there during the ceremony too. I think I will serve food right away so it doesn't sit any longer then move on with the night.

Tradition is out the window these days because the "traditional bride" really doesn't exist. Now there is the modern bride and the modern wedding has all the dances after dinner. Personally I think brides should go right from the grand entrance to the first dance because you already have everyone's attention. But there's really no downside either way.

P.S I'd like to think that people aren't so rude that they wouldn't put to fork down to watch your dances. Like thats insane.
