Bridesmaid dress cost?!?! How much is too much?

Mrs.L, on January 3, 2013 at 8:12 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 17

The dress I chose for my lady's is around $80 and that's made to fit. When ordering the dress you give your measurements and the lady makes to to fit to avoid unneeded and can be costly alterations. Is this too much to ask my girls to spend?

I think it's far from too much. I bought my girls dresses from Target for $35 a piece. Some ladies have their bm's spend $100-$200 for a dress. It just depends on the type of dress you like & your ladies like and what they can afford. But that's not too much at all!!

My MOH only ended up spending $25.00 but I think $80 is very reasonable IMHO

I think it depends on the person and / or wedding party. I think $80 is very reasonable.

The most expensive BM dress I've worn in a wedding was $150 and I hated spending that much, but that was my choice. I was my sister's only attendant and she told me to pick whatever I liked. That was my favorite dress too so I guess it was worth it.

I only wanted mine to spend 100 max. I found a dress for 140 and I paid the overage. I think 80 is very reasonable.

Of course your girls may be in a different finicial position so you could always ask what the are comfortable with.

Just ask your girls. I was freaking out because the dresses that I like were a little expensive (I thought). I asked them and they all said the price was fine.

$80 is perfectly reasonable. You may want to ask each lady individually what her budget is--if any of them give a number that's lower than $80, you could offer to pay the difference.

I asked both girls and they really didnt have much to say other than ok. Then about a month ago one purchased and the other didnt. I asked why and she said that she has a dress in my color from a previous wedding and doesnt understand why i wont let her wear that one. I felt stupid. I told her that the length is too short and i didnt like the "party" dress idea. She has ignored me since. I asked my FMIL if she talked to her and she told me that she thinks im being overbearing even tho i spent almost $300 for my dress and shoes for her wedding.

$80 is pretty damn cheap if you ask me. I wish I had been in a wedding where the BM dress had cost $80. The cheapest one I ever paid for was $125. The most expensive was $360 - but in all fairness it was an elaborate ball gown. My girls are paying $170 for their dresses. It's really all about what your girls can afford AND what kind of dress it is for the money they are paying. There is a bride I know right now who is making her BM's purchase $500 clubber dresses as their attire. That, in my opinion is ridiculous. I think you are absolutely fine!

$80 is more than reasonable! Each time I was a BM I spent $200+ with alterations. My girls spent between $90 - $150 depending on the dress they ordered.

Yeah, I think the average I've spent is $150-$200 with alterations. That's very reasonable!

Yea, my girls picked a dress that was $200. I really wanted to stay below 150 but they went for a long gown so I went with it! $80 is awesome. But always check with your girls on what their budget is!

I don't think $80 is unreasonable at all. I think it is very reasonable, actually.

This is why I'm a big proponent of either mismatched dresses or giving the BMs a few choices at a variety of price points. What's breaking the budget to one girl may be no big deal to another, and I just don't want my wedding day to put any undue financial stress on my girls. I think an honest conversation about expectations (yours and theirs) right when the bridal party is asked is the best way to go.

Wow! $80 is a great price! I struggled the most with BM dresses because I was really worried they would be too much money. I ended up finding the perfect dress at J.Crew and my girls had no problem with the $200 price tag, but I am sure they would have loved it if they were $80! I think anything under $100 is a good find!

That's really cheap but it does depend on the budgets of the ladies in your wedding. But to put it in perspective that's less than half the price of my BM dresses.
