Bridesmaid Dress (before alterations) Normal??

Grace, on February 8, 2018 at 11:47 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 13
So most of my bridesmaid dresses are really big on them. They already paid a lot for be dresses and I don’t want them to pay an arm and a leg for the alterations. Does this dress look like the normal way they fit before alterations? How much work really needs to be done? The bridal salon says it’s normal but I’m not sure. Thanks in advance!

Honestly, it looks two sizes too big to me. Did they order the wrong size? If you have multiple bms, did the sizes get mixed up or maybe they can swap dresses to find a better fit? It will definitely have to be taken in, check with a local seamstress for possibly better prices than the bridal salon for alterations.

I agree! But if it is a mistake then it’s a really big one. At least 4 of my bridesmaids dresses are like that.

It looks really big. I’ve only needed minimal alterations on BM dresses.

So I got mine at davids bridal and they all came in just like they were messured. However my one bridesmaid is in another wedding ordered from a different store they told her to order a 6 (which she is for sure NOT) and she got in in 30 days before the wedding and its HUGH. Alterations are not cheep =(

The only alterations I’ve ever needed as a BM was getting a long dress hemmed. That looks like she’s going to need a lot of alterations.

I was in a wedding where we got our BM dresses from a local boutique near the bride. ALL of ours came at least 2 sizes too big. They took our measurements and ordered "the correct size" for all of us (yea right) and said "maybe that dress style runs large" and we should come to them for alterations and they'd "give us a discount".

It was pretty obvious that they purposely order large dresses so everyone has to come back and pay them for alterations. We ALL went to local tailors instead. It's abnormal for measurements to be taken and dresses to be drastically large when they come in.

I can't tell but is the entire dress too big or is it fitted in one area but loose in others? Generally the salon is supposed to order the size that fits the biggest part of the individual's body (eg. hips, waist, or chest) then take it in where it'll be looser. Say one person has bigger hips that would fit in size 8 but smaller everywhere else that would fit in size 6, the salon would order the size 8 to fit the hips and alter the rest.

The dresses are too big all over. One girl could pull the dress on over her head with it zipped.

Who measured the BM's? If the shop did it, I would have them redone and insist that the shop do a rush re-order and bear the cost. If the BM's provided their own measurements, you don't have such a strong case against the shop.

They measured half of the bridesmaids (the ones whose dresses are too big) the other half got them done at other bridal salons because they live in different states.

That really makes it sound like the mistake of that particular salon, in which case they should replace the dresses with the correct sizes. Not only does that look like a costly alteration job, but its not necessarily going to turn out looking like you expect it to, it almost looks like the dress might have to be take apart and reconstructed. IMO you should take this up with the salon and they should correct the mistake that was made.

That's pretty suspicious... I know some salons purposely order too big so they reel in customers for their alterations as well. I would demand they remeasure and fix it.

The last wedding I was in we ordered our dresses and they all came in way too big, by the time we got done with alterations the boning in mine was offset and the dress was a mess. I actually left my dress in the DR where the wedding was it was just a terrible experience. I would def, as PP's have suggested, get them resized correctly and put a rush order on them. Those are way too big!
