Brides who struggle with anxiety?

Mal-Pal, on November 2, 2015 at 3:34 PM Posted in Planning 0 21

Hey ladies! When I was 18 I started struggling with anxiety and panic attacks. I was on medication for it at the time but started eating healthy and exercising and was able to get off of it but still struggle occasionally. Crazy thing is I speak in public for my job and have NO problem doing that but at my brother's wedding a few weeks ago (bridesmaid) I felt like I was going to pass out right there in the grass. It passed but I'm a bit nervous as to what could happen at my own wedding. Number of people has no bearing, as I may have one with 3 people or with 300.

Did anyone else struggle with this? How did you do it? My FH is the greatest man I've ever met and says if I feel it coming on just signal and he'll just reach around and support me but I just really don't want to pass out at my own wedding!

I have similar anxiety, and while I discourange diagnostic stuff online, I will say that shit happened so fast I don't even REMEMBER everyone's eyes on me. When I'm in other's weddings I was always panicked, but at my own I didn't even have the wherewithal to tear up. I barely remember walking down the aisle, I was chatting with my dad.

It goes too fast for you to stress, promise. Have whatever your backup is necessary - for me, it was having just one ativan on hand, even though I haven't been on it for years and didn't end up taking it. Just knowing it was there was enough.

Going through it right now in the planning process so God help me on my actual wedding day. My plan will probably be to skip my blood pressure medication and take a Xanax. Big hugs to you, you're not going through this alone. I hope everything turns out just fine for you.

Are you working with a doctor or therapist? If not I would find a good trusted one! If you are, I would bring this up with them. They may have some suggestions or could work with you by bringing you into situations like that to help give you techniques to handle situations with lots of people.

Try visualizing yourself standing at the altar on your day. Close your eyes, take deep, even breaths, and picture it in your mind. Keep doing this until the wedding, and it may help you feel more relaxed as you're actually standing there!

M that makes me feel better!

I am right before you! We can get through this. I second that the excersize and diet helps alot with my type of anxiety. I truly hope its like m said.

I have actually considered going to a doctor and asking for someting.

@M, thanks so much! So glad it worked out for you! That makes me feel better, knowing that I may not even have the issue on the day. I'll probably talk with my doctor who put me on my original meds, he'd definitely prescribe me something for day of (heck, he'll be there!).

@jennifer, ooh Hugs for you as well! I hope the same for you!!

I love the visualizing idea! I'll do that! I haven't been to the doctor for it in years and I did have a therapist while I was in grad school (the University gave grad students free sessions) but I may go to another before the wedding!

    Thanks so much ladies!

@Kathryn, I'd definitely encourage you to talk to you're doctor if it's an issue! But yes, changing my lifestyle was HUGE.

Definitely. Wedding is in 5 days and so far I'm doing okay. Lots of deep breaths and lots of exercise. We plan everything as much as we can and consider every ridiculous scenario that could happen, but at the end of the day, if panic is going to set in, it will whether we want it to or not.

We're doing a first look, so I hope that will alleviate some potential anxiety.

Since you still have some time before your wedding, I would highly recommend a therapist. I started seeing one a little over a year ago and it has done wonders for me. It's someone to talk to and someone that is on your side. My therapist is sending me an e-mail on our wedding day with words of encouragement. Just reading that will put me in a calm state of mind.

@allison, I love that! I'm a huge proponent of therapy, I just hadn't considered going back because it's been under control for a good many years but I think I will now.

I have bad anxiety attacks but they sound different from yours. I got on anti-anxiety medicine back in 2013 before my first trip leaving the country to go to Mexico. The medicine helped me SO much! I am still on them, but looking to get off them since I have so many other daily medication. So you can ask your doctor about getting on some, even just temporarily. I was on my medication during the wedding and honeymoon and didn't have any anxiety attacks. But I wasn't surprised because this medicine has done so well for me. I've only had them in extreme situations.

@Pancakes, my doctor told me they take many forms. Mine are the textbook: can't get a good breath, get really hot, feel faint, occasionally some tears, etc. So glad your meds have helped you! I will probably ask him to at least write me a new prescription. I may not even use it but having it available would probably help. Smiley smile Glad yours is under such control!

Hi! I also have anxiety issues, sometimes I've had panic attacks at the worst moment Smiley sad and DH suffers from OCD. Not sure what he did to calm down, but I used natural pills of passionflower+valerian+lemonbalm. They don't always do the trick, but they did for the wedding day. I had a panic attack the week-of, but luckily on our wedding day I was fine again.

Sending you thoughts and hugs! You're not alone in this Smiley smile there's tons of us that went through/will go through it with issues similar to you.

I struggle with anxiety and panic attacks as well and yet didn't have anything happen at the wedding which totally surprised me. I was so focused on everything and never thought about it.
